Hubble Telescope

The Hubble Space Telescope is a telescope that was launched into low Earth orbit in 1990. It was created by NASA with contributions from the European Space Agency to capture images of stars, galaxies, and planets located far from Earth. The Hubble can observe objects up to 15 billion light years away. It has made several important discoveries and provides scientists with insights into the structure and evolution of the universe.

The Hubble Space Telescope

By: Tatum and Ava

1. What is the name of your device? - Ava
The name of the device that we have chosen is called “The Hubble Space Telescope”.
2. What is your device used for? - Ava
The Hubble space telescope is used for capturing stars, galaxies and planets in our solar
system that are really far away from us. The hubble is able to see up to 10-15 billion light years
away. It helps scientist gather lights from these thing in our solar system for a better
understanding of our universe around us. It has been a huge successful in space discovery and
is one of the most famous telescopes sent to space. It is most famous for its discoveries for
many new things like, moons around Pluto, comets, and it’s clear unobstructed view of the
universe from high above the rain clouds and light pollution.

3. Who invented it? And/or who currently makes this device? - Ava

The Hubble telescope was invented by NASA in 1990 with contributions from the european
space agency, and launched the same year on April 24, 1990. It was originally only supposed to
last for 15 years, but now has lasted 30 years and could last until 2030-2040. NASA made it
about 13.3 meters long (43.5 feet), which is the length of around a large school bus and with a
width of 4.2 meters (14 feet). It weighs over 10,886 kg (around 24,000 pounds) and it’s made
out of a, honeycomb core with many thin layers of aluminum and magnesium fluoride that
makes up the mirrors. The hubble is made from a telescope called, Cassegrain reflector
telescope. These telescopes are used for detecting ultraviolet light in our atmosphere. NASA
has made many other telescopes before but nothing like quite the Hubble.
4. What occupation would most frequently use your device? -Tatum

There is only one Hubble telescope and it’s up in space. Its job is to observer the most
distant stars, galaxies and planets and takes pictures of them to send back to
astronomers. The pictures sent back to earth are clear views of the universe in visible,
infrared and ultraviolet light. The Hubble orbits around the Earth taking these pictures.
5. How does your device works? - Ava
The Space Hubble works is by orbiting high above the earth, using radio waves to send
imagines back to earth. The hubble uses radio waves because, they have the longest
wavelengths in the electromagnetic spectrum, these waves range from a football field to the
size of our planet. How the hubble is able to see these imagines, is using a lens. The hubble has
two mirrors used in it’s design to collect and focus light. After the light travels through
telescope, it hits the concave lenses (curved lenses). These lenses reflect of light of the primary
mirror, sending it back towards the front of the telescope. NASA chose to use concaves lens
because, they are the only type of lenses that are able to relfect light toward a single focal
point, when a convex lens will only relfect up and away from a focial point. Concave lenses are
used throughout all of most solar devices.
6. The range of costs of your device? - Tatum
The price to first create the Hubble Telescope was $1.5 billion. The price continues to go as
they make changes and improvements to it, along with unexpected troubles that happen.
If they were to make another Hubble Telescope the cost would be around $6.5 billion.
