SN Phased Array

Phased array ultrasonic inspection uses multiple transducer elements in an array that can be pulsed separately to sweep a sound beam through various angles and focus at different depths, providing a two-dimensional image of defects. This allows not only detecting cracks but also determining their size, shape, and orientation. While more complex and expensive than conventional ultrasonic testing, phased array inspection offers advantages like changing beam direction freely and inspecting hard-to-reach areas remotely. It is commonly used to inspect welds, measure thickness, and detect corrosion in industries like construction, pipelines, and power generation.

PHASED ARRAY

ULTRASONIC
INSPECTION
Presented by : Stallion S
Phased Array Ultrasonic inspection technique
Phase: Gradual stages
Array: set of arrangement.
• In conventional ultrasonic testing,
flaw(crack) detection is performed with
one transducer. It generates & receive
high frequency sound waves.
• or two paired transducers (one for
transmitting and another for receiving).
Therefore, only a one-dimensional
display is possible when a crack is
detected.
• Unlike conventional ultrasonic testing method, phased array
system can sweep a sound beam through a range of refracted
angles or along a linear path, or dynamically focus at a
number of different depths, thus increasing both flexibility &
capability in inspection setups.
• As a result , not only the crack position detected but also its
length, width, depth, etc., can be confirmed from two-
dimensional image.
• A sophisticated computer based instrument that is capable of
driving the multi-element probe, receiving & digitizing the
returning echo's, & plotting that echo information in various
standard formats.
• In phased array ultrasonic method, the probe unit comprises
multiple transducer (from 16 to as many 256 small elements)
can be pulsed separately. These may be arranged in a strip, a
ring, a circular matrix shape.
Advantages:
• The direction of ultrasonic beam can be changed freely, & the same defect can be
detected from multiple positions, providing high crack detection capacity.
• Remote crack inspection is possible
• The shape & size of flaws can be judged easily by image processing.

Limitations :
• Phased array equipment is more complex & expensive.
• The first time set-up is very power consuming as the input parameters must be
selected carefully.
• Phased array transducers are generally quite large, so maintaining ultrasonic
coupling with the surface is difficult.
Application:
• It is widely used in industrial sectors, such as construction, pipelines & power
generation.
• Weld inspection
• Thickness measurements
• Corrosion inspection
• Inspection of rolling stock wheels and axles.
