CONCRETE MIX DESIGN - Lecture

This document provides instructions for designing a concrete mix to meet specific requirements. It involves determining the proportions of cement, water, fine and coarse aggregates, and admixtures. The design process includes 5 stages: 1) determining the water-cement ratio based on the required compressive strength, 2) calculating the water content, 3) determining the cement content, 4) calculating the total aggregate content, and 5) selecting the fine and coarse aggregate proportions. An example is provided to design a mix with a 28-day compressive strength of 30 MPa. Calculations are shown to determine the water-cement ratio, cement and aggregate contents, and fine/coarse aggregate proportions.

CONCRETE MIX DESIGN

1
Learning outcome:
At the end of this lecture, students should be able to
design the concrete mix with specific requirement

2
Concrete

+ admixture (if required)

3
Concrete mix design
Purpose:
To determine the proportion of concrete constituents to produce workable and an
economical concrete with the required strength and durability.
The ratios may be expressed by volume or weight, but mixing by volume is more practical in
the field.

4
Normal concrete mix design
• Design is based on the assumption of certain minimum properties of concrete
such as strength.
• Necessary to design a mix to have a target mean strength greater than the
specified characteristic strength by an amount termed the margin.
• Target mean strength = characteristic strength + margin

5
Stage 1
Deals with strength leading to the free-water/cement ratio

Stage 2
Concrete mix Deals with workability leading to the free-water content

Stage 4
Deals with the determination of the total aggregate content

Stage 5
Deals with the selection of the fine and coarse aggregate
content 6
Example:
Prepare 6 concrete test cubes (150x150x150mm) for compression test at 7 and
28 days after casting according to the required specification of the mix.

7
Specification of the mix
NO DESCRIPTION SPECIFIED
1 Characteristic compressive strength at 28 days 30 N/mm²
2 Defective rate 2.5%
3 Cement type OPC class 42.5
4 Maximum aggregate size 20mm
5 Slump required 30-60mm
6 Maximum free w/c ratio 0.55
7 Minimum cement content: 290 kg/m³
8 Coarse aggregate Crushed
9 Fine aggregate Uncrushed
10 Grading of fine aggregate (%) passing 600 µm sieve 54%
11 Relative density of aggregate 2.70
8
Calculation for quantity of concrete
Calculation of quantity required to cast concrete structure must be based on the volume of the structure. In addition, extra
quantity is required for cubes to enable compression strength tests to be carried out. However, during mixing, an additional
of 10% volume is recommended to accommodate for waste. Table 3.3 shows the calculation in obtaining the concrete
volume.

Size of mould = 150 x 150 x 150 mm

= 0.15x0.15x0.15
= 0.003375 m³ (1 cube)
Total volume for 6 cubes = 6 x 0.003375 m³ = 0.02025 m³
The trial mix cube mixing volume = Total volume +10% additional
= 0.02025 m³ + 0.002025 m³
= 0.022275 m³ 9
