SHS Empowerment Technology Lesson 1 Students Copy 1

Digital technologies are empowering tools that help people accomplish tasks more efficiently. Empowerment technology refers to applications people use everyday on mobile devices and computers. These applications help with tasks like creating websites, videos, and finding routes. Empowerment requires being information literate by determining needs, accessing information, and evaluating sources, as well as being technology literate by using digital tools. Information and communication technologies have significantly impacted communication, economics, education, and travel by enabling online activities. Emerging technologies continue to integrate machine learning and intelligence through applications, devices, and conversational systems.

“A major success factor for Obama’s victory was how

Obama’s campaign used social media and technology
as an integral part of its strategy, to raise money, and,
more importantly, to develop a groundswell of
empowered volunteers who felt they could make a
difference.” – The European Business Review, “Obama and
the power of socialmedia and technology”, 2010, p.1.
Empowerment
Technology
A Definition
Empowerment

› the process of giving yourself, or other

people, the capacity to achieve a
specific end-goal
Empowerment Technology

› refers to computer technology that we

use almost every day, which enables us
to do tasks that, in the past require
professional help
Empowerment Technology
Examples

› A fifteen-year-old owner of a bakeshop

wanted to sell her cookies online. Knowing
that web development is a complex subject,
she checked for a free website creation tool.
She found WiX and she was able to put up
her own website in just an hour
Empowerment Technology
Examples

› The student council wanted to create a video for

their upcoming fundraising project. When they
asked for help from videographers, they were
surprised at the cost given to them. So, the council
decided to find a video creation tool online. They
tried Powtoon and was able to produce multimedia
video in a day
Empowerment Technology
Examples

› A businessman is running late for a meeting.

To find the fastest route from his home to
his office, he uses Waze and he is able to tell
his estimated time of arrival to the people
waiting form him at the office.
Empowerment
through ICT
Empowerment through ICT

Empowerment is a strategy that aims to give

individuals the tools and resources necessary to take
initiative, as well as gather and analyze information or
situations, thus making informed decisions to solve
problems and improve services or performance.
Empowerment through ICT

In the context of Information and Communications

Technology (ICT), empowerment requires being
information literate and technology literate.
Information Literacy Competencies
Enumerated by the Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher
Education (2000)

Determines the nature and extent of information needed

Accesses the needed information effectively and

efficiently
Uses information effectively to accomplish a specific
purpose
Information Literacy Competencies
Enumerated by the Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher
Education (2000)

Understands many of the economic, legal, and social

issues surrounding the use of information, and accesses
and uses information ethically and legally

Evaluates information and its sources critically and

incorporates selected information into his or her
knowledge base and value system
Technology Literacy
› “the ability to use digital technology,
communication tools, and/or networks to define an
information need, access, manage, integrate and
evaluate information, create new information or
knowledge and be able to communicate this
information to others.” – defined in 2002 by
International ICT Literacy Panel
ICT and Society
ICT and Society
› Several studies conducted pointed out the importance of
ICT for sustainable development
› Significant changes have been observed in four major
aspects of life:
• communication,
• economics,
• education, and
• travel
Communication

› Social networking sites

› Instant messaging and video calls
› Forums and webinars (web seminars)
Economics

› Online marketing
› Convenient business transactions
› Online payment gateways
Education

› Source of learning, teaching, and research

materials
› Online learning communities
› Recording and computation of grades
› Managing records and other administrative
purposes

A Peek in the
Past
Back to the Future
The focus of technological advancement today
is actually on:

Integration of technology knowledge and skills

in the 4Cs or 21st Century skills

Student’s college readiness

Back to the Future
Back to the Future
Evolution of the Web
Back to the Future

Tim Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web

- open-source information space where documents
(formatted and annotated using HTML and web
resources) are identified by Uniform Resource
Locators (URLs) interlinked using hypertext links and
accessed via the Internet
- considered as central to development of Information
Age
- used as primary tool of people to interact with the
Internet
Back to the Future

Web 2.0
- Read-write Web
- Web of Interaction
- Participative Web
- allowed users to interact and collaborate with each
other through social media dialogue
- could create user-generated content in a virtual
community
- Includes social networking sites, blogs, folksonomies,
wikis, video sharing sites, hosted services, web apps,
and mashups
Back to the Future

Web 3.0
- Web of Data
- Semantic Web – an extension of Web 2.0 by virtue of
standards of the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C)
- “provides a common framework that allows data to be
shared and reused across application, enterprise, and
community boundaries.”
Back to the Future

Web 3.0
- to some experts, this works as a personal assistant
- could find not only the keywords, but also interpret the
context of your search
- the more you browse the web, the more information
about you is stored
- search results include your preferences based on your
browsing history, songs you like to hear, the food you
like to eat, places you want to see, among others

Trends
Tech Trends

› Gartner, Inc., highlighted the Top 10 Strategic

Technology Trends of 2017 based on three themes,
namely, intelligent, digital and mesh.
AI and Advanced Machine Learning

› Composed of many technologies and techniques

(deep learning, neural networks, and natural-
language processing) that make smart things
“intelligent”
Intelligent Apps

› Virtual personal assistants, like Siri and Google

Home, that perform some human assistance
functions, making tasks easier
Intelligent Things
› Refers to the physical things that are imbued with
machine learning capabilities through rigid
programming
› Examples: autonomous cars, like Google Car,
drones, Internet of Things (IoT) smart appliances,
and many more
› Devices will have a collaborative “intelligent
things” model rather than a standalone one.
Virtual and Augmented Reality

› Refers to the immersive technologies that are now

dominating the market
› VR is now accessible through different wearables
like VR boxes that are cheap, and smartphones
capable enough of running VR apps
Virtual and Augmented Reality

› Though focused right now on gaming, VR and AR

technology advancements will soon show how
these would be useful in other aspects of society,
like business and research
Conversational System

› We have Siri on Apple devices and Cortana for

Windows devices (Virtual Personal Assistants)
› Through evolution of technologies such as Google
Home, this will not be limited to single device, but
connected to a network of multiple Internet of
Things devices like house lights, air conditioning
units, and many more
Mesh App and Service Architecture
(MASA)
› Enables users to have an optimized solution for
targeted endpoints in the digital mesh (e.g.
desktop, smartphone, automobile) as well as
continuous experience as they shift across these
different channels*
Now that the lesson has ended, I can...

1. define what ICT is and explain how it has been used

for people empowerment

2. describe the current state of ICT technologies, online

systems, functions and platforms

3. compare and contrast varied online platforms, sites,

and content to best address situational challenges in
society in an ethical manner
