Geothermal Energy: Grade 9

This document provides information about geothermal energy. It begins by defining geothermal energy as heat from within the Earth. It then describes how geothermal energy is generated through geothermal power plants that use steam to power turbines, and geothermal heat pumps that transfer heat from the Earth. Finally, it gives examples of geothermal power plants in the Philippines and discusses advantages and disadvantages of geothermal energy.

What is Geothermal Energy?

Geothermal came from a Greek word
Geothermal “Geo” which means “Earth”, and;

energy “Thermal” which means “heat”.

Therefore, it is the heat from the Earth.

Geothermal Energy is
generated in two ways:
● Geothermal Power Plants – it is where heat
from within the Earth changes water into
steam (water in the gas phase), which turns
steam turbines that generate electricity.
Geothermal Energy is
generated in two ways:
● Geothermal Heat Pumps – It removes the
heat from the fluid in the Earth connection,
concentrates it, and then transfer it to the
building.
Geothermal energy use in the world

More than 16
countries use it
Geothermal Power Plant in
the Philippines
Makban Geothermal Complex
(also known as Makiling Banahaw), is located approximately 26 km from Taal Volcano, only 11 km outside of the 14
km evacuation zone. It is located at the base of another volcano, Mount Makiling.
Tiwi Geothermal Complex
is made up of 3 power plants with residential neighborhoods adjacent and located 5 km northeast of Malinao
Volcano (or Mount Malinao). Together with the Makban plant, they support 15% of the Luzon grid.
Malitbog Geothermal Power Station
The world's largest geothermal power plant under one roof located in Malitbog, Kananga, Leyte, Philippines.
The power plant is one of four operating in the Leyte Geothermal Production Field.
