SMALL
RUMINANT
GOAT BREEDS
BOER

 he most-prized Boer goats are


large, stocky animals with a
white body and a red head,
brown eyes, lop (downward-
hanging) ears, backward-curving
horns, and strong, well-placed
legs.
 Adult males often reach 160 kg
(350 pounds), and females can
weigh as much as 110 kg (about
250 pounds).
SAANEN

white colored.
Some black spots in the nose, and
ear.
The ears are straight to upwards.
no horns. Small sized legs.
Udder become very big sized.
Long sized neck.

TOGGENBURG
a medium sized, sturdy, vigorous and
very alert in appearance.
 have soft, fine, short or medium
length hair and their hair is laying
flat.
 Their colour is solid, varying from
light fawn to dark chocolate with no
preference for any shade.
ANGLO-NUBIAN
 are very famous for their beautiful
look, milk and meat production.
 white,black, brown or mixed with
various colored.
 They are mainly raised for milk
production.
 Long sized pendulous ears hanged
close to the head.
ALPINE
 can come in virtually any colour or
colour combination, and should have
medium-sized ears that they carry in an
erect position.
 They are almost as large as Nubians.
 Males weighing about 170 pounds.
 Females weigh about 125.
 Females have well-balanced, even
udders.
PHILIPPINE NATIVE GOAT

 a small, stocky animal with a


mature weight ranging from
15-30 kg.
 It is red, white or black or a
combination of these colours.
 It is primarily raised for
meat and seldom for milk.
 Most goats in the Philippines
are marketed in the live per
head basis.
LA MANCHA

 are well
behaved, good
tempered and calm in nature.
 They are also very suitable for
raising as pets.
 They are quite dependable
dairy goat breeds for their
moderate temperament and
easy adaptability.
OBERHASLI
 coatcolor is generally light
tan to deep reddish brown
with black points.
 Oberhasligoats can also be
black in color as a result of
recessive genes.
 Thesegoats have erect ears
and straight faces.
KALAHARI

 Red coat color. White or light


shades of red are not desirable,
as they do not provide as much
camouflage from predators in
their native pastures.
 They also have strong herding
instincts for protection as well.
 Kalahari Reds have long, floppy
ears.
KIKO
 is an aggressive forager,
capable of thriving under
conditions of feed
deprivation.
 This breed is generally solid
white or cream in color
although there are some of
darker colors including black.
 have erect ears
BARBARI
 is a small goat of compact
form. 
 The head is small and neat,
with small upward-pointing
ears and small horns.
 The coat is short and is most
commonly white spotted with
brownish red; solid colours
also occur.

JAMUNAPARI
  large sized, tall, leggy with
large folded pendulous ears
and prominent Roman nose.
 typical coat is white with
small tan patches on head

KATAHDIN

 are hardy,adaptable, low
maintenance sheep that
produce superior, meaty
carcasses.
 do not produce a fleece
 medium sized and efficient,
bred for utility and for
production
MERINO
 medium sized animals
with very beautiful
appearance.
 can be either polled or horned.
 polled version has no horns, or
has a very small stubs, known
as scurs.
 the horned version has long
and spiral horns, which grow
close to the head.
 its excellent wool quality
ST. CROIX

 are completelywhite with
others being solid tan,
brown, black or white
with brown or black
spots.
 Ewes and rams are polled
(no horns), and rams have
a large throat ruff.
BLACK BELLY
 extremely hardy and strong
animals, can thrive in the hot
and humid environments that
are challenging for most
sheep but they can also do
well in colder climates.
 They are alert and docile in
terms of temperament. They
are very prolific, and they
reproduce non-seasonally.
DORSET

 are dual-purposewool and
meat sheep. Dorset ewes
produce fast-growing, meaty
lambs; twins are the norm.
 Use:Dorsets are dual-purpose
wool and meat sheep. Dorset
fleece is white, strong, and
free of dark fiber.
DAMARA

 Ewesappear feminine,
whereas the rams are
more robust and
masculine.
 Desert breed, namely long
legs, fat tail, short hair
and respiratory rather
than a cylindrical.
Moderate head.
DORPER

 most fertile of sheep


breeds that is hornless
with good body length and
a short light covering of
hair and wool.
 Thebreed has
the characteristic black
head (Dorper) as well as
white heads (White
Dorper).

SIMBRAH

 They have a slight hump above


the neck and have slightly
larger ears than European beef.
 They come in various colors,
usually red with a bit of white

HOLSTEIN-FRIESIAN

Color & Appearance:  black

Size:  Large, a mature cow
should weigh 1,500 lbs.
Known for:  Producing the
most milk per cow
JERSEY
 Color & Appearance:  fawn or
cream colored, gray, brown, or
black, with or without white
markings.  The tail, tongue, &
muzzle are usually black as
well.
 Size:  smallest breed of cattle; a
mature cow should weigh 900
lbs.
 Known for:  producing milk
with the highest fat.
SAHIWAL
 Color and Appearance:
Reddish brown to the
more predominant red,
with varying amounts of
white on the neck, and the
underline.

 Known for: Heat-tolerant


and noted for its high
resistance to internal and
external parasites

vary from a yellowish
brown to dark brown.

Color & Appearance:  fawn &


white, with orange-yellow
skin

mature cow should weigh

Known for:  Their milk being
golden in color, heifers
mature and breed quickly
AYRSHIRE

Color & Appearance: red &


white spotted, the red varies
in shade, the spots are
sometimes very jagged.
Size:  Medium sized; a
mature cow should weigh
1,200 lbs.
Known for: Great udders,
longevity, & hardiness.
SHORTHORN
 Color & Appearance:  Red,
red and white, white, or roan
(a mix of red and white hair)
 Size:  Large in stature, a
mature cow should weigh
1,400 lbs.
 Known for:  Being very
versatile, they may be used
for both meat and milk;
hardiness, longevity, & easy
calving. 
BLONDE D’ AQUITAINE

 very heavy and large


animals. They are usually
wheat or cream colored,
varying from a dark to very
light fawn.

valued as draft oxen and
for their meat and milk.
HEREFORD
 They are muscular,
moderate to long in length

mouth are dark, and the
skin may be speckled.
 Theyare slightly bigger
and have larger horns.
NAGPURI

 smallerand lighter
body compared to other
buffalo breeds found in
north India.
 Their body color is
generally black, but they
have white patches on
their face, legs and tail
tips
SURTI BUFALLO
 medium size and docile
temperament. The breed has
got a fairly broad and long head
with a convex shape at the top
in between horns. Horns are
sickle-shaped and flat which
grow in a downward & backward
direction and then upwards at
the tip forming a hook. The
skin is black or brown.
JAFARABADI
 big dome shaped forehead
with flat, thick, downwardly
curved horns.
 The bulge of forehead
sometimes covers eyelids
also.
 Horns exhibit wide variation,
go downward sideways, then
upward and inward finally
forming a ring like structure.
MEHSANA

 mostly black in colour, a


few animals are black
brown or brown.
 Eyes are very prominent,
black and bright bulging
from their sockets with
folds of skin on upper
lids.
