Drive Cycle Development

This document outlines a final year project that aims to develop drive cycles for electric vehicles (EVs) and hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) in a metropolitan city. It will analyze road conditions and traffic on working and non-working days to create the drive cycles. Mathematical open-loop and closed-loop models of an EV and HEV will be developed in MATLAB to simulate the vehicles and analyze factors like energy consumption. A control strategy will also be designed to minimize energy usage and emissions. Data will be collected to construct the drive cycles, which will then be used to test the vehicle models and evaluate performance.

GUIDE: DR
M.KARTHIKEYAN
OBJECTIVES
■ To develop a drive cycle for a city road (i.e., metropolitan
city) on analysing the road conditions and traffic
situations on working and non working days.
■ To investigate the properties of the two types of vehicle
such as electric vehicle and hybrid electric vehicle with
respect to the drive cycle.
■ To design a model of EV and HEV using software(such
as MATLAB) and simulating to obtain results.
METHODOLOGY
 Constucting a drive cycle for BEV and HEV of a selected region.

 A mathematical open loop electric vehicle model will be developed and

matlab simulation will be carried out and calculates the energy
consumption at each stage of energy conversion

 Calculating losses at each stage of energy conversion.

 Analyzing the most critical factor of vehicle design.

 Performing sensitivity analysis of the electric vehicle design.

 A mathematical closed loop model will be developed and simulation
will be carried out.

 A control strategy has to be developed for BEV and HEV.

 Optimal power split control strategy has to be developed to minimize

total energy consumption and reducing emission.

 Selection of power electronic components based on economics and

energy analysis of vehicle.

 Analyzing the battery performance of BEV and HEV and improving

regenerative braking efficiency.
DRIVE CYCLE

■ A driving cycle is a series of data points representing the

speed versus time of a vehicle.

■ Driving cycles are produced by different countries and

organizations to assess the performance of vehicles in
various ways :

1. fuel consumption,
2. electric vehicle autonomy and
3. polluting emissions.
TYPES OF DRIVING CYCLES
■ There are two types of driving cycles:

1. Transient driving cycles
It involve many changes, representing the constant speed changes typical
of on-road driving.
Example: FTP 75 ( Federal Test Procedure)

2. Modal driving cycles
It involve protracted periods at constant speeds.
Example: NEDC( New Eurpoean Driving Cycle)
VEHICLE MODEL

Two types of model :

1. Open loop vehicle model ( Backward facing )
2. Closed loop vehicle model ( forward facing )
BACKWARD FACING MODEL
 A open loop vehicle model represents the energy consumption of electric
vehicle.

 It calculates energy consumption at each stages of the power train.

 In backward facing approach, we can analyze factors influencing energy

consumption:

 aerodynamic drag
 motor efficiency
 mass of the vehicle etc..

 We can do sensitivity analysis and find the critical factor of the vehicle
design and reduce the effect of the factor.
Types of resistance considered for a vehicle:

 Air resistance
 Rolling resistance
 Gradient resistance

 Energy required to accelerate the vehichle and to overcome

aerodynamic drag.

 Energy to overcome frictional losses.

 Losses in motor, battery and in inverter can be calculated.

FORWARD FACING MODEL
 It also calculates energy consumption at each stages of the power
train.

 In forward facing approach, based on the constraints of components,

the algorithm decides the power flow and energy consumption.

 In this power split control strategy will be developed to reduce total

energy consumptionand also reducing emission.

 We can calculate soc of battery required to reach the distance.

 It used to analyze regenerative braking and power split between two

motors
■ Electric vehicle closed loop mathematical model comprises the below
components:

 Battery model
 Inverter model
 Electric machine model
 Driver model

■ In closed loop model ,energy and sensitivity analysis can be done and
also we can improve the battery performance and regenerative braking
efficiency.
DRIVE CYCLE DEVELOPMENT

Steps involved in developing a drive cycle are:

■ Step 1 : Route selection

■ Step 2 : Data collection

■ Step 3 : Data construction

■ Step 4 : Drive cycle construction

Route selection
 Route selection is one of the major aspects in developing driving cycles.

 Select the route in which the driving cycle has to be developed based
on the application of the drive cycle.

 According to the application of the driving cycle, the region from

where it should be developed will be selected.

 Example:  the real performance of a vehicle in city traffic can be

analyzed using a transient driving cycle.
DATA COLLECTION

■ A large quantity of speed vs time data is required to develop a

generalized driving cycle of a region.

■ Data collection for driving cycle development can be done in different

methods. Common techniques of a data collection are
a) Vehicle chase method
b) Onboard instrumentation method

■  Data depends on factors such as climate, age group of driver,

emotional state, time of day, and gender.
DATA CLASSIFICATION
 Ample data that have been collected and further processed for data
classification.

 Divide each driving cycle data collected from the vehicle into small
micro-trips.

 Create micro trip data, dividing the total distance covered into a few
segments.

 Micro trip data can be generated by dividing the data into start-stop
segments, equal time segments, or speed range segments.
DRIVE CYCLE CONSTRUCTION

 Micro-trips are developed using the data collected.

  In each micro trip data, remove odd data sets and derive a general
pattern.

 A driving cycle will have some reference parameters. Minimum speed,

Maximum speed, Average speed, etc..

 Driving Cycles can be constructed combining the selected micro-trips.

 Reference parameters of the constructed driving cycles will be

calculated and compare with the parameters of whole collected data.
