Verbs

Verbs can show actions, occurrences, or states of being. There are different types of verbs including action verbs, transitive verbs, intransitive verbs, helping verbs like "be", "have", and "do". What is Verb?

• Verbs are words that show an action (sing), occurrence (develop), or state of


being (exist).
Action Verbs (Perbuatan)

• Action verbs are verbs that describe what the subject of the sentence is doing
• Jump, smell, run, push, sleep, cry, eat, etc.

• There are two types of action Verbs


• Transitive Verb
• Intransitive Verb
Transitive verb

• A transitive verb expresses an action which passes from the


subject to object .
• It requires ‘giver’ and receiver (Pemberi – Penerima)

• Owe, feed, paint, make, drive, kick, give, buy, sell, show, etc.
Example

1. Ali kicks Tamtam under the table


• Ali (subject) kicks (transitive verb) Tamtam (object) under the table (Preposition)

2. Aminah buys the drink from Alia.

3. Jamal sold his computer to the store owner.


Intransitive Verb

• Verbs that do not need object or no receiver


• Run, nap, bark, snore, rain, arrive, go, etc.

1. Hazim went to the market


2. Rashidi arrives to school at 7.00 am everyday
3. The cat lies under the table
Helping verb (Verb to Be)

• Verbs to be are helping verbs in a sentence


• There are three verbs to be
• Is
• Am
• Are
• ‘IS’ is used with singular • ‘ARE’ is used with plural & • ‘AM’ is used with the pronoun

• Ali (singular) is 15 years • Aminah and Maisarah are • I am very tired

• She (singular) is not sick • We are going to school • I am sick

• In a sentence, action verbs that comes after verbs to be, will have ‘-ing’ at
the end of the verb

• He is sleeping
• We are going to the market with our friends
• I am making a cake for Mother’s Day
Helping Verb (Verb to have)

• Verb to have typically implies having possession of something


• Verb to have can also shows the subject performing an action

• I have a sister
• She has breakfast in the morning
• We have some homework to do
• The base verb to have is ‘HAVE’

• Have is used with plural, • Has is used with singular


‘you’ and ‘I’ subjects
• They have a football match • Ali has a blue bag
later • She has breakfast in the
• Do you have any question? morning
• I have to go to the mosque • It has a black fur
Helping verb (Verb to Do)
• The base verb to do is DO
• We usually use verbs to do in questions or negative sentences

• Do is used with plural, you & I • Does is used with singular subjects
• Do you have any money for the bus? • Does he know he is late?
• I do not like him • She does all the chores by herself
• They did the homework by themselves • It does not like the food we gave it.
