Lecture 04 - WDS

Windows Deployment Service (WDS) allows administrators to remotely deploy and install Windows operating systems over a network. It uses PXE and DHCP to boot client devices, then transfers installation files using TFTP. WDS supports deploying Windows Vista through Windows 10. To set up WDS, a server must be on the domain, and active DHCP and DNS servers are required. The role is installed, default install images are added, and then an OS can be deployed to clients.

Lecture 04
Windows Deployment Service (WDS)
Understanding Windows Deployment Service(WDS)
◎ Windows Deployment Services is a server technology from Microsoft for network-based
installation of Windows operating systems.
◎ It is the successor to Remote Installation Services (RIS).
◎ You can use WDS to set up new clients with a network-based installation without requiring that
administrators visit each computer or install directly from CD or DVD media.
◎ WDS is intended to be used for remotely deploying
○ Windows Vista
○ Windows 7
○ Windows 8
○ Windows 10
○ Windows Server 2008 – 2019
◎ WDS uses disk imaging, in particular the Windows Imaging Format (WIM).

2
PXE – Preboot eXecution Environment
◎ PXE specification describes a standardized client–server environment
◎ That boots a software assembly, retrieved from a network, on PXE-enabled clients.
◎ On the client side it requires only a PXE-capable network interface controller (NIC), and uses a
small set of industry-standard network protocols such as DHCP client and TFTP.
◎ In modern data centers, PXE is the most frequent choice for operating system booting,
installation and deployment.

Install WDS Cont.
◎ Prerequisites for installing Windows Deployment Services
◎ AD DS. A Windows Deployment Services server must be either a member of an AD DS domain
or a Domain controller for an AD DS domain. The AD DS domain and forest versions are
irrelevant; all domain and forest configurations support Windows Deployment Services.
◎ DHCP. You must have a working DHCP server with an active scope on the network because
Windows Deployment Services uses PXE, which relies on DHCP for IP addressing.
◎ DNS. You must have a working DNS server on the network before you can run Windows
Deployment Services.
◎ NTFS volume. The server running Windows Deployment
◎ Credentials. To install the role, you must be a member of the Local Administrators group on
the server. To initialize the server, you must be a member of the Domain Users group

Install WDS
◎ To install and configure Windows Deployment Services in order to install an operating system,
perform the following steps.

 Install Windows Deployment Services. (WDS)

 Configure the server and add the default images (Install.wim and Boot.wim) that are
included on the product DVD in the \Sources folder.
 Install an operating system.
