NON-ACTION VERBS
• These are the verbs that describe
states/feelings/needs/senses but not actions. These

NON-ACTION VERBS
• Use the Simple Present Tense with most non-
action verbs.
e.g. I hate my nickname.
e.g. Do you remember her name?
e.g. Dingo has two family names.
e.g. Jan wants to change her name.
e.g. You don’t look happy today.
NON-ACTION VERBS
• Do not use the Present Progressive Tense-
even when the verb describes a situation
that exits at the moment of speaking.
e.g. I want to have a special name.
NOT I am wanting to have a special names.
e.g. She needs me now.
NOT She is needing me now.
NON-ACTION VERBS
• I don’t like rude people. (Right)
• I am not liking rude people. (Wrong)
• I’m hungry right now. I want an apple. (Right)
• I’m hungry right now. I am wanting an apple.
(Wrong)
• I hear a siren. Do you hear it now? (Right)
• I am hearing a siren. Are you hearing now?
(Wrong)
• You look very happy today. (Right)
• You are looking very happy today. (Wrong)
There is both an action and a non-action meaning for
some verbs such as ‘have, come from, think, taste,
smell, feel and look.’

1. LOOK
• The book looks interesting. (non-action)
(=it appears interesting)
• I am looking at the book right now.
(=using your eyes)
2. THINK
• I think that grammar is easy. (non-action)
(“think” means “In my opinion or believe”)

• I am thinking about my homework right now.


(“think” expresses thoughts that are going
through a person’s mind, using your mind )
3. HAVE
• Tom has a car. (non-action)
(“have” means “own” and expresses possession)
• Sarah is having a bath now. (=taking a bath)

-have trouble/have a problem
-have breakfast/lunch/dinner/coffee/tea
-have a snack
-have an operation
-have a bath/shower
-have a party
4. COME FROM
• I come from Mexico. (non-action)
(My country of origin is Mexico.)

• I am coming from school. (action)


(I’m on my way from school.)
• **FEEL (both Simple Present and Present
Continuous)

*I feel tired today. = I am feeling tired today.

*How do you feel? = How are you feeling?
