This document is a project proposal to produce cyclohexanone from phenol using a hydrogenation process. The project will be supervised by Ms. Ammara Waheed and co-supervised by Ms. Aasia Farrukh. Group members include Zain ul Abideen, Rana Awais, and Ahmad Saleem. The presentation will introduce cyclohexanone, compare production methods, select the phenol hydrogenation process, and discuss raw materials, the process flow diagram, and world consumption and production of cyclohexanone.

Cyclohexanone

Cyclohexanone (C6H10O) is a six-carbon cyclic molecule with the

.
ketone functional group.

• It is a colorless oily liquid with an acetone like smell. Cyclohexanone

can be characterized as a volatile, combustible, and toxic liquid.

• Cyclohexanone is a hazardous material. It is less dense than

water with a pleasant odor.

5

Applications of Cyclohexanone

• Cyclohexanone is used to form caprolactam and adipic acid which are

used to produce nylon 6,6 and nylon 6. Similarly, it acts as an intermediate
in the production of fertilizers, films, soaps, and others.

• It is used for the synthesis of paints, dyes, rubber chemicals, coatings,

pharmaceuticals, plasticizers, herbicides, adhesives etc

• Cyclohexanone finds wide end-use applications. Additional uses include

spot remover, degreasing of metals, polishes, and lubricating oil additives.

Available Manufacturing Processes

There are two available manufacturing Processes, which

are:
1. Cyclohexane Oxidation Process
2. Phenol Hydrogenation Process

Process Selection

By comparing bothavailable processes, we have selected

“Phenol Hydrogenation Process” due to following reasons:
• This process has comparatively high yield.
• Raw Material(Phenol) can be imported from China.
• This process is commercially/industrially developed process.
• Negligible Environmental Impacts.

10
Raw Materials

Following raw material are use for production of

Cyclohexanone
• Phenol
• Hydrogen

Consumption of Cyclohexanone in Pakistan

• In Pakistan, cyclohexanone is majorly imported from other countries like

China, USA, Tawian to meet the industrial requirements.
• The major importers of cyclohexanone in Pakistan are Berger
Paints
Limited, Swat Agro Chemicals, and Al-Mehran Chemicals..
