Measurement of Power in Three Phase Circuit: - Suraj Ambre 53 - Rushikesh Thale 54

This document discusses methods for measuring power in a three-phase circuit. It describes three methods: the three-wattmeter method, which uses three wattmeters connected to each phase; the two-wattmeter method, which uses two wattmeters connected to any two lines; and the single-wattmeter method, which can only be used for a balanced load by connecting the current coil in one line and switching the voltage coil between the remaining two lines. The three-wattmeter and two-wattmeter methods can measure power in both balanced and unbalanced loads, while the single-wattmeter method is only for balanced loads. Formulas for calculating total power for each method are also provided.

MEASUREMENT OF POWER IN

THREE PHASE CIRCUIT

- SURAJ AMBRE 53
- RUSHIKESH THALE 54
WHAT IS THREE –PHASE POWER ?
THREE-PHASE ELECTRIC POWER IS A COMMON TYPE OF
ALTERNATING CURRENT USED IN ELECTRICITY GENERATION,
TRANSMISSION, AND DISTRIBUTION.[2] IT IS A TYPE OF POLYPHASE
SYSTEM EMPLOYING THREE WIRES (OR FOUR INCLUDING AN
OPTIONAL NEUTRAL RETURN WIRE) AND IS THE MOST COMMON
METHOD USED BY ELECTRICAL GRIDS WORLDWIDE TRANSFER
POWER.THREE-PHASE ELECTRICAL POWER WAS DEVELOPED IN THE
1880S BY MULTIPLE PEOPLE. THREE-PHASE POWER WORKS BY THE
VOLTAGE AND CURRENTS BEING 120 DEGREES OUT OF PHASE ON
THE THREE WIRES. AS AN AC SYSTEM IT ALLOWS THE VOLTAGES TO
BE EASILY STEPPED UP USING TRANSFORMERS TO HIGH VOLTAGE
FOR TRANSMISSION, AND BACK DOWN FOR DISTRIBUTION, GIVING
HIGH EFFICIENCY.
METHODS OF MEASUREMENT OF
THREE PHASE POWER
VARIOUS METHODS ARE USED FOR
MEASUREMENT OF THREE PHASE POWER IN
THREE PHASE CIRCUITS ON THE BASIS OF
NUMBER OF WATTMETERS USED. WE HAVE
THREE METHODS TO DISCUSS:

THREE WATTMETERS METHOD

TWO WATTMETERS METHOD
1. SINGLE WATTMETER METHOD.
METHOD IS USED TO
MEASURE POWER IN 3
MEASUREMENT OF THREE PHASE, 4-WIRE CIRCUITS.

WATTMETERS METHOD
CAN ALSO BE USED IN 3
PHASE, 3 WIRE DELTA
CONNECTED LOAD,
WHERE POWER
CONSUMED BY EACH
LOAD IS REQUIRED TO
BE DETERMINED
SEPARATELY.

MEASUREMENT OF 3

THE TOTAL POWER IN A THREE WATTMETER
METHOD OF POWER MEASUREMENT IS GIVEN BY
THE ALGEBRAIC SUM OF THE READINGS OF THREE
WATTMETERS. I.E.
THREE-WATTMETER-EQ1

W1 = V1I1
W2 = V2I2
W3 = V3I3

PHASE POWER BY TWO WATTMETER METHOD
TWO WATTMETER METHOD CAN BE EMPLOYED TO
MEASURE THE POWER IN A 3 PHASE, THREE-WIRE STAR
OR DELTA CONNECTED THE BALANCED OR
UNBALANCED LOAD.
IN TWO WATTMETER METHOD, THE CURRENT COILS OF
THE WATTMETER ARE CONNECTED WITH ANY TWO
LINES, SAY R AND Y AND THE POTENTIAL COIL OF
EACH WATTMETER IS JOINED ON THE SAME LINE, THE
THIRD LINE I.E. B

USING ONE WATTMETER METHOD
THIS METHOD IS USED ONLY FOR A BALANCED LOAD. WHEN
A 3-PHASE SYSTEM IS CONNECTED TO A BALANCED 3-PHASE
LOAD, THEN THE ENTIRE POWER CONSUMPTION OF THE
LOAD CAN BE DETERMINED BY USING A SINGLE
WATTMETER, WHOSE ARRANGEMENT IS SHOWN BELOW.
THE WATTMETER CURRENT COIL IS CONNECTED
IN SERIES WITH ANY ONE OF THE LINES AND
HENCE CARRIES THE FULL LINE CURRENT. THE
VOLTAGE COIL IS CONNECTED IN SUCH A WAY
THAT, ONE END TO THE LINE IN WHICH THE
CURRENT COIL IS PLACED, THE OTHER END IS
CONNECTED TO THE REMAINING TWO LINES
THROUGH AN SPDT SWITCH, AND HENCE THE LINE
VOLTAGE WILL BE IMPRESSED ON IT.
