Alternative Response Tests

This document provides information and guidelines about alternative response tests. It includes: 1. Sample types of alternative response tests such as true/false, yes/no, and right/wrong questions. 2. A special type that measures cause-and-effect relationships. 3. Specific guidelines for constructing alternative response tests, such as using single ideas and positive statements. 4. The advantages of these tests being efficient and allowing wide content sampling, and limitations of only measuring knowledge level and susceptibility to guessing.

1 Introduction : Alternative Response Test

Chiara Alisa

The Alternative Response item consists of a

declarative statement that allows students to
choose between two comparable answers, one is
correct and the other is wrong.

The most common forms of objective tests.

2 Sample Types of Alternative Response Tests

Farrah  TRUE or FALSE

True or false require the students to select a response that
shows recognition of correct or incorrect information that
is presented to them.

Another term applied to these item is “forced choice”

because the student must choose between two possible
answers.
Sample Types of Alternative Response Tests

Farrah  TRUE or FALSE

Direction: If the statement is true circle the letter “T” if
the statement is false circle the letter “F”.

T F 1. The green coloring material in a plant leaf is

called chlorophyll.
T F 2. The corolla of a flower includes petals and sepals.
T F 3. Photosynthesis is the process by which leaves
make food for a plant.
Sample Types of Alternative Response Tests

 Yes or No
Farrah
02
Direction: Circle “Y “ if the answer is YES and
circle “N” if the answer is NO.

Y N 1. Is 50% of 20 greater than 11?

Y N 2. Are one whole equal to five equal parts?

Y N 3. Is 25% of 44 less than 12?

Sample Types of Alternative Response Tests

 Right or Wrong
Farrah
02
Direction: If the statement is right, circle the letter “R” and
circle “W” if wrong.

R W 1. All Filipino citizens can vote and be voted upon.

R W 2. The right to vote is both a privilege and a

responsibility.
3 Special Type Of Alternative Response

Zaira
02
 Recognize Cause and Effect Relationship

 The student is to judge whether the relationship

between two propositions in one statement is
true or false.
Special Type Of Alternative Response
Example: In each of the following statements, both parts of the
Zaira
02
statement are true. You are to decide if the second part explains
why the first is true. If it does circle “YES” and if does not circle
“NO”.

Yes No 1. Leaves are essential because they shade the tree

trunk.
Yes No 2. Whales are mammals because they are large.

Yes No 3. Some plants do not need sunlight because they get

food from other plants.
Special Type Of Alternative Response

Micaela
 Measures Some Simple Aspects of Logic

Example:
Read each of the following statements:
If the statement is true, circle the letter “T”, if it is false
circle the letter “ F” . Also if the converse of the letter is
true, circle “CT”, if the converse is false, circle “CF”.
Make sure to give answers for each statement.
Special Type Of Alternative Response

Micaela
1. All trees are plants.
T F CT CF
2. All parasites are animals.
T F CT CF
3. All eight-legged animals are spiders.
T F CT CF
4. No spiders are insects.
T F CT CF

4 Alternative Response Test

Bryan
1. Use only one important idea in each
stem.
When an item includes two or more ideas
and the student may not know one of them, it
cancels out he usefulness of the other idea
(which he knows) in evaluating this
knowledge.
Specific Guidelines /Suggestions in Constructing
Alternative Response Test

Bryan
 Example:

1. The president of the Philippines is elected to office

every six years.
POOR
2. According to the constitution, the Presidential term of
the Philippines is elected to office every six years.

2. Write items positively.

Avoid negative statements such as “no” or
“ not”, as much as possible used them only
when the concepts being tested cannot be
stated positively.

Alternative Response Test

Bryan Examples:

1. None of the parts was needed in the constitution of

the gadget.
POOR
2. All of the parts were necessary for the construction
of the gadgets.

Bryan 3. Avoid long complex sentences.

Long complex sentences tend to measure

extraneous facts of reading comprehension
rather than the knowledge or understanding
being measured.

Ok! Okay!

Alternative Response Test

Bryan Examples:

1. Despite the theoretical and experimental difficulties of

determining the exact pH value of a solution is acid by
the red colour formed on litmus paper when it is inserted
into the solution.
POOR

2. Litmus paper turns red in an acid solution.

4. Avoid including two ideas in one
statement unless cause-effect
relationships are being measured.

Kristine Examples:
1. A worm cannot see because it has simple eyes.
T F
POOR

2. Worms do not have simple eyes.

5. True statements and false statements

should be approximately equal in
length.

Alternative Response Test

Kristine

6. The number of the true statement and

false statement should be approximately
equal. Vary the percentage of true statements
somewhere between 48 to 60 percent. Never
make your statements true or false.

Kristine

7. Place the item in a random manner.

Avoid presenting them in a pattern such as

TFTF or TTTFFF, etc. which favor students
who are merely guessing.
5 Advantages and Limitations

Dorina
02
 Efficient
 Easy to construct
 Provides for a wide sampling of
material
 Limited to measuring at the knowledge
level
 Susceptibility to guessing.
Tips to Remember !!!!!

• If you are simply doing T/F stay away from opinion

Dorina
02 statements.
• Keep the stem clear and concise (avoid complex
sentences)
• Do not use subjective words such as frequently, most,
some, few, usually, often, etc.
• Do not use absolute terms such as always, never, all,
none, or only.
• Avoid the use of negative terms: no, not.
• Keep a balance response set.
