Passive Voice

Passive voice is a type of clause or sentence where the subject is acted upon by the verb rather than performing the action. It is formed using some form of the verb "to be" plus the past participle of the main verb. Examples of forming the passive voice in different tenses are provided, along with exercises translating sentences between active and passive voice and between English and Indonesian.

Forming the passive voice

S + auxiliary verb /to be + V3 (past participle)

Present simple am, is, are + V3 (made) Wine is made from grapes.


Many cars are made in Japan.

Present progressive am, is, are + being + V3 The document is being sent right now.


(sent) I am being sent to work in the London
office.

Past simple was, were + V3 (invited) John was invited to speak at the


conference.
We were invited to Daniel and Mary’s
wedding.

(past participle)

Past progressive was, were + being + V3 The dog was being washed when I got home.
(washed) Their cars were being washed while they were in the mall
shopping.

Future (will) Will/shall be + V3 (signed) The contract will be signed tomorrow.
The documents will all be signed by next week.

Future (be + going am, is, are + going to be + A bridge is going to be built within the next two years.
to) V3 (built) New houses are going to be built in our neighborhood.

Present perfect has, have + been + V3 (sold) That start-up has been sold for $5 million.
The rights to his book have been sold for $250,000.

Modals: can/could can, could + be + V3 (issued) A passport can only be issued at the embassy.
He said the documents could be issued within the week.
