U-1 Introducing Cells-1

Cells are the basic units of life. They are too small to be seen with the naked eye, so microscopes are used to observe them. Plant and animal cells have some similarities, like a nucleus, cytoplasm, and cell membrane, but also have differences. Plant cells have a cell wall and chloroplasts, while animal cells do not. The shape and structure of cells are related to their specific functions within multicellular organisms.

WEEK-1 Cells and how can we see cells?
Microscopes-Types
Unicellular and multi cellular
Components of cells
Plant and animal cells-difference
Living or non-living
What are the Criteria used to classify organisms as
living or nonliving?
All organisms are made up of cells
How do we see cells? Can we see them?
• Cells are too small
to be seen with the
naked eye so we
must use a
microscope.
Activity: Label the parts of a microscope in
the worksheet given
Research It! 5min

- Use a graphic organizer to show the different
types of microscopes?
Microscopes
• A microscope is an instrument used to see objects that are too small to be
seen with the naked eye.
• Microscopy: the science of investigating small objects and structures using
special instruments like microscopes.

Learning objective: To learn about Plant and animal cells
Outcomes:
1. Define a cell.
2. Label the main contents of the plant and animal cells.
3. Identify the function of each part.
4. Compare and contrast the similarities and the differences between plant cell and animal cell.

Starter
Look at the picture then
answer the question below
1. Describe how does a cell look like
a city?
2. How can you define a cell.
3. Outline no less than 2 facts about cells
7A Building blocks of life - Cell fact file
Facts about cells:

Living things are made up of tiny building blocks called

cells.
Each cell breathes, takes in food, gets rid of
wastes, grows, reproduces and dies.
A living thing can be just one cell or
millions of cells.
Big living things don’t have bigger cells
they just have more cells.
Animal and plant cells

Here is a picture of a plant cell and an

animal cell.
Cells are the smallest units of life.

Some cells can exist on their own, whilst

others are found in groups.

Humans are a collection of many billions

of cells, all working together.
What is a cell?
While some cells do look different, all cells have
three basic features.

nucleus

cytoplasm

cell
membrane
Do all cells look the same?

Most cells have three basic parts.

nucleus cytoplasm cell membrane

But cells can be different shapes and sizes and also

have different functions. This is because they are…

specialised

The shape of a cell is related to its function.

Unicellular and Multicellular organisms
• Has a single cell • Have multiple cells
• Able to supply all their own • Cells are specialized and carry
needs. out certain functions.
RECALL

CELL WALL
• Only found in plant cells
• Adds protection and
support
• Made of cellulose
• Allows water and
dissolved substances to
pass through
CHLOROPLASTS
• Chloroplasts are found
only in plant cells
• They contain a pigment
called chlorophyll
• This pigment helps in
photosynthesis by
absorbing sunlight
MITOCHONDRIA
• Powerhouse of cell
• Both plant and animal
cells have many
mitochondria
• Function-cellular
respiration
ENDOPLASMIC RETICULUM

• Endoplasmic reticulum is
an organelle in the cell
whose function is to
produce proteins for the
rest of the cell to function
• Tube like structures that
transport materials
Ribosomes
• Cells have tiny granular
structures called ribosomes
• Can be found floating in the
cytoplasm and also attached
to the endoplasmic
reticulum( ER)
• Function-makes protein
Nucleus
• Control center of the cell
• Contains genetic material-
DNA
• Contains nucleolus
• Contains a double
membrane
Lysosomes
• Organelles that breakdown
cellular waste (Breakdown
unwanted macromolecules)
• Cleaning crew of cell

• Lysosomes
• Nucleolus
