question…
EXAMPLES:

1. I think Miracle is the best movie of all time.

* This is personal, uncertain. Even if you
don’t agree then you can’t question about it. An
opinion is a statement that cannot be proven.
2. “THE PHILIPPINES IS ONE OF THE BEST
TOURISM DESTINATIONS IN THE PLANET.”

* This can be considered an opinion which may be drawn

from facts and data showing the number of tourists coming
in and out of the country on a specific period as compared
to the records of other countries or which may be drawn
from his own personal point of view or impression.
ACTIVITY: WHAT’S NEW!
READ THE EXCERPT OF A SPEECH-LUCKY
YOU!
Thomas Jefferson once said "I'm a great believer in luck, and I find the
harder I work, the more I have of it." What, though, is luck? Webster's
dictionary suggests that luck is the "events or circumstances that operate
for or against an individual."
In truth, luck has nothing to do with something operating for or against
you. Luck is not a matter of chance, it is a matter of being open to new
experiences, perseverance and hard work, and positive thinking.
Studies have shown that lucky people tend to be far more open to new
experiences. Those who are unlucky are creatures of habit, never varying
from one day to the next. If you want to be lucky, add some variety to your
life. Meet new people, go new places, and increase the possibility of those
chance opportunities the "lucky" people always seem to run into.
Luck, though, isn't just about trying new things. Luck is
also about hard work, even when it is, well, "hard."
A 1994 study suggested that lucky people are the ones
who continue to try, even when they are faced with
obstacles. Study initiator Richard Wiseman said, "People
have to persevere, they have got to stick at it. People give
up too soon. The ones who achieve their goals are the ones
when they hit obstacles don't just give up and pack it in,
they try again.
If you want good luck, you have to work through the
times of bad luck to get there.

Being open to new experiences and persevering are
important in creating luck, but so is your thought process.
The great Lucille Ball once said, "Luck? I don't know
anything about luck. I've never banked on it, and I'm afraid
of people who do. Luck to me is something else: Hard work --
and realizing what is opportunity and what isn't."
You make your own luck in this life, and the great thing
about it is that anyone can do it. Lucky you.
QUESTIONS:

• 1. What do you think is the speech all about?

• 2. Do you believe in luck? Why or why not?
• 3.Is it convincing or informing? Why or why
not?
II. READ AND ANALYZE THE STATEMENTS
BELOW FROM THE SPEECH.
1. A 1994 study suggested that lucky people are the ones who continue to try, even
when they are faced with obstacles.

2. I believe that luck is a matter of being open to new experiences, perseverance

and hard work, and positive thinking.
Q- Which do you think expresses feeling or emotion? Why?
Which do you think expresses strong belief or declaration? Why?
• Statement 1 is an assertion because if we based it on the speech. The idea is
based on the study. Therefore, the statement is true or false.

• If an opinion is a statement that involves the speaker’s emotion and cannot be

proven, then statement 2 is an opinion. It involves the person’s feelings and
cannot be proven. Also, the signal word ‘believe’ gives a hint that it is an
opinion.
ACTIVITY: LET’S TRY THIS!
• Identify whether the statement is an opinion. Explain your
answer.
• 1. I think luck is not a matter of chance.
• 2. A 1994 study suggested that lucky people are the ones who
continue to try, even when they are faced with obstacles.
3. I feel that luck is a matter of being open to new experiences,
perseverance and hard work, and positive thinking.
4. I really believe that William Shakespeare is the best writer.
ASSERTION

- is a statement used to make a strong declaration or to make a firm

belief on a particular topic. It usually includes forceful or confident
and positive statement regarding a belief or a fact.
- is somewhat true and somewhat false. It may be somewhat similar
to opinion (that is, a belief of someone) but it can be proven as true
or false. It is a declaration of the person’s belief and may be proven
as true or false.
EXAMPLES
• 1. Thomas Jefferson once said, "I'm a great believer in
luck, and I find the harder I work, the more I have of
it."
*It is an assertion because it is a declaration of the
person’s belief and may be proven as true or false.
2. A 1994 study suggested that lucky people are the ones who
continue to try, even when they are faced with obstacles.
* It’s an assertion since it is a strong declaration of the
person’s belief and may be proven as true or false.
MORE EXAMPLES - ASSERTION

1. An apple a day keeps the doctor away.

* Most people think so but there is no supporting
evidence.
This is just a declaration or strong belief and no evidence at
all.
2. The Philippines is the happiest country in the world.
* This is an assertion because it is subjective and not
founded on factual evidence at all.
3. Beowulf is the best movie, and everyone
must watch it.
* Statement- makes a claim or a strong
belief.

REMEMBER:
• In writing an assertion the writer aims to
convey an idea or feeling directly. Further,
the writer convinces the reader to accept
his or her claim about a particular topic.
•
ACTIVITY 2: LET’S DO THIS!
Let us identity whether the sentences below are
assertions.
1.Drinking eight glasses of water a day can prevent us
from having Covid-19.
* This is an Assertion. It can be assumed that drinking
water may prevent us from catching COVID-19, but it
can’t be proven as of now.
2. The trial of face-to-face classes was recalled
by our President because of the discovery of a
new COVID-19 Variant in the United Kingdom.
*Assertion- this statement shows strong
declaration of an idea which is all about the trial
of face to face due to the discovery of a new
COVID-19.
3. MOST FILIPINOS ARE SATISFIED WITH THE WAY OUR GOVERNMENT RESPONDS
TO THE PRESSING ISSUES ABOUT THE PANDEMIC.

*Opinion- Because this is just a personal view

about the issue. It may not be most of the
Filipinos who are satisfied.
4. “Police and local officials should respect the rights of those
they arrest for violating curfew and other public health
regulations, which can be done while still allowing the
Philippine government to take appropriate measures to combat
COVID-19,” said Phil Robertson, deputy Asia director.

*This is an assertion because this expresses a strong

declaration or strong belief on why the Police and local official
should respect the rights of those they arrested.
ACTIVITY 3: WHAT’S MORE – (OPINION OR ASSERTION)

I.Let us identify together whether the statement is an

opinion or an assertion.
2. I believe that Charles Babbage is credited with having
conceived the first automatic digital computer.

3. I will give this plus point to another group if you could

not submit your project until 4 in the afternoon.

3. Many poor families have greatly benefitted from the

two tranches of the government’s Social Amelioration
Program.
II. ACTIVITY 4: WHAT’S INSIDE!
READ THE SPEECH BELOW, THEN ANSWER THE QUESTIONS.

Ladies and gentlemen a pleasant day to all of us.

• While nuclear supporters are probably wrong when they claim that nuclear power is
completely safe, they are right that nuclear power is the best option to meet the US’s growing
energy needs. According to energy experts, “Energy consumption in the Untied States is
projected to grow for at least the next 25 years.” In addition, “Nuclear energy accounts for 9
percent of U.S. energy consumption.” Basically, the country’s energy experts are saying that
nuclear energy is an underused that can help meet the United States’ demand for energy. Of
course, many will probably disagree with this assertion that nuclear energy alone can meet all
of the country’s energy needs. Although the contributions of nuclear energy may seem trivial,
they are in fact crucial in terms of today’s concern over sustainable energy. Nuclear power is
the only option for meeting the increasing energy needs without exhausting the planet’s
resources.

3. How did you make your assertion?
4. What did you learn from the activity?
5. If you were asked to make a question regarding our topic today, what
would it be? Why?
WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO LEARN HOW TO
FORMULATE STATEMENT OF AN OPINION AND
STATEMENT OF AN ASSERTION?
*It is important that you can learn how to distinguish the two concepts from a
lot of information that you may encounter. In this technological age where any
information can be easily accessed any time, it is essential to know which ones you
should believe right away and which ones you should research further. Likewise, as
you explore more lessons that require you to write, especially an argumentative essay, it
is a must that you learn how to properly come up with common expression of your
opinion or assertion since argument starts with a good opinion while assertion is
where you make a claim and/or clearly define the side you want to argue.
