Defect tracking and reporting involves recording any defects found during testing in a defect log. This log tracks defects from discovery to resolution and closure before product release. It contains details like defect ID, test case reference, description, steps to reproduce, assigned tester and date, developer response, fix allocation, fixer name and date, additional test cases, regression testing details. Defects are prioritized and given a severity level. The status is updated as defects are resolved, from new to open, reassigned, reopened, rejected, and closed.

Defect Tracking & Reporting

Introduction
• The defects detected during Testing are recorded in a Defect Tracking Log and to

communicated to the developer. The defect log’s primary means by which defects

are tracked to closure before the product is released to the customer.

• This is one of the tester’s major work product which has high visibility seen by the

developer and noticed by the Management.

• Bug reporting is an art of persuasive writing to make the developer ‘buy’ your

argument and get motivated to fix


Characteristics
• Priority
Def: How soon the defect has to be fixed irrespective of the severity of the defect.
Grading:-
1 – Resolve immediately
2 – Give High Attention
3 – Normal Queue
4 – Low Priority

• Severity
Def: Seriousness of the defect from the testers point of view
Grading:-
1 – Critical
2 – Major
3 – Minor
4 - Cosmetic
Descriptions
• In Defect Tracking the current status of the defect and track the history of the
defect from the discovery to final repair

Status:

“New” : Created a defect with the ‘New’ Status

“Open” : Changes the defect status to ‘open’

“Re-Assign” : Allows assigning the defect to different person without changing


the status
“Re-Open” : Changes the status from ‘closed’ to ‘open’

“Reject” : Sets the default status as ‘open’

“Close” : Sets the status as ‘closed action’
