Week 1 Comp 10

A computer is an electronic device that can accept data as input, process the data based on programmed instructions, and output the results. It has the ability to store and manipulate data quickly and accurately. The main components of a computer are the input devices, output devices, and central processing unit (CPU). Proper care and maintenance of computers is important to prevent damage from liquids, magnetic fields, overheating, and viruses. The cyber world refers to the online environment that allows users to transact business and activities digitally like they can in the physical world.

THE WORLD OF COMPUTERS

• Some think it is the world of online
computers and communications
which implies today's fast-moving
high-technology world online. That is
one way to look at it if you are into
abstractions and distractions. We are
interested in something more
tangible and real; so we’ve redefined
the term to give it the power and
meaning that it deserves.
Learning Targets/Specific Objectives:

• Give the Fundamental Features of

Modern Computers.
• State the Guidelines in using the
Computer
What is Cyber World?
• An online world where users have the
mechanisms in place to transact any business
or personal activity as easily and freely as they
can transact them in the physical world.
• An environment for sophisticated online
computing.
• The futuristic online world of computing
What is a Computer?
• A computer is a device that accepts
information (in the form of digitalized
data) and manipulates it to produce a
result based on a program or sequence
of instructions on how the data is to be
processed. There are complex computers
that may store data (including the
program, which is also a form of data)
for a given duration.
What is a Computer?
•A computer is an electronic
device that manipulates
information, or data. It has the
ability to store, retrieve,
and process data.
What is a Computer?
• A computer is a programmable electronic
device that accepts raw data as input and
processes it with a set of instructions (a
program) to produce the result as output. It
renders output just after performing
mathematical and logical operations and can
save the output for future use. It can process
numerical as well as non-numerical
calculations. The term "computer" is derived
from the Latin word "computare" which
means to calculate.
Electronic Data Processing (EDP)

• Arithmetic and logical operations

of data obtain the desired results.
• Send and receiving information
from one location to another.
• Arranging data into a specific
order.
FEATURES OF A COMPUTER
FEATURES OF A COMPUTER
•Speed
•Accuracy
•Automatic
•Reliability
•Sustainability
SPEED
• A computer works with much higher
speed and accuracy compared to
humans while performing
mathematical calculations.
Computers can process millions
(1,000,000) of instructions per
second. The time taken by
computers for their operations is
microseconds and nanoseconds.
ACCURACY
• A computer is reliable and robust. It
never makes a mistake. If an error
occurs it may be due to the
command sent by the user.
• Computers perform calculations
with 100% accuracy. Errors may
occur due to data inconsistency or
inaccuracy.
AUTOMATIC
• It may execute the process
without any intervention of the
user commands care sent.
• Once the data or instruction are
fetched from secondary devices,
such as optical disks and hard
disks etc.
RELIABILITY
• This denotes that the computers never
get tired as humans do. I there are
numerous tasks to be made then each
will be executed at the same time or
period.
• A computer is reliable as it gives
consistent result for similar set of data
i.e., if we give same set of input any
number of times, we will get the same
result.
SUSTAINABILITY
• Computers have been a part of our daily
life, with their multiple functions they
are widely used all over the world.
Computers can be used for home uses,
for business-oriented tasks, weather
forecasting, space explorations, learning,
transportation, banking, and medicine
among others. All modern computers
can perform different kind of tasks
simultaneously.
HARDWARE COMPONENTS OF
COMPUTER SYSTEM
• The internal architectural design of a
computer differs from one system model
to another. However, the basic
components and their functions are the
same for all computer systems. The
construction of a typical computer (PC)
is very simple. It contains different
components. Each component performs
a specific function in the computer.
HARDWARE COMPONENTS OF
COMPUTER SYSTEM

•INPUT DEVICES
•OUTPUT DEVICES
•CENTRAL
PROCESSING UNIT
INPUT DEVICES
• The hardware components that are used
to enter data and instructions into the
computer are called input devices. In the
old computers punched card readers and
paper tape readers were used as input
devices.
OUTPUT DEVICES
• The computer processes the given data
to produce the output. The devices that
are used to get output from a computer
in readable form are called output
devices.
CENTRAL PROCESSING UNIT
• Central Processing Unit or CPU is the main
component of the computer. It is also called
processor or microprocessor; the CPU is
considered the brain of the computer. It
performs all operations of data according to a
program's instructions. It executes the
program instructions and tells other parts of
the computer what to do. The CPU receives
instructions of program from the main
memory and executes them one by one.
Proper Care of Computers
1. Place the computer in a stable fixture or table. If
it needed to be moved to another location, handle
it properly. If the computer falls off, the case and
its components can be damaged.
2. Keep the computer in a dry place. Place the
computer and power supply away from any kind
of heat element. A computer is an electronic
device. If water or any other liquid gets into it, it
may result to total malfunction Excessive use of
the computer may also cause overheating or
overclocking.
Proper Care of Computers
3. Keep the computer away from strong magnetic
fields such as high-capacity transformers and
electric motors. These can hinder proper
performance of the computer and can damage your
data. Devices such as metal detector, x-ray
machines can harm the computer hard disk, floppy
disk, and other media and storage devices.
4. Shut down the computer properly and do not
forget to save your work. Data in your computer
may be lost in case of power failure. Remember to
save your data periodically.
Proper Care of Computers
5. In case of malfunction, do not disassemble the
computer by yourself.
6. In cleaning, do not apply a disinfectant cleaner
directly to the computer. Use a soft clean cloth to
do it.
7. Do not use a computer when you are near to the
water supply, a bath tub, wash bowl, kitchen sink
or laundry tub, wet places or near a swimming
pool.
Proper Care of Computers
8. Install an antivirus program and keep it up-to-
date. New computer viruses are discovered daily,
and some of them may seriously harm the
computer and cause you to lose data.
9. Be careful when opening electronic mails (e-mails)
from sources not known unto you. Computer
viruses are often triggered from within e-mail
attachments so be cautious when opening any
attached file.
