CHAPTER 1

LESSON 6 : TEACHING AS YOUR

VOCATION , MISSION AND
PROFESSION
TEACHING AS YOUR
VOCATION
“A MAN KNOWS HE HAS FOUND HIS VOCATION WHEN
HE STOPS THINKING ABOUT HOW TO LIVE, AND BEGINS
TO LIVE"

-THOMAS MERTON
Teaching as your Vocation
 Etymology of the word Vocation
• It comes from the Latin word “ vocare " which
means “ to call "
• Based on the etymology of a word, vocation,
therefore means a call.If there is a caller and someone
who is called. There must be also a respond
For Christians, the caller is God Himself

For our brother and sister Muslims, Allah

 Vocation is a strong feeling of suitability for a particular

career or occupation
Teaching as your Vocation
Teacher Mark is treated as a teacher for
teaching his students the lessons everyday. He
teaches everything he knows, showing off his
mastery of the subject, but not even
considering the feelings of his students
towards difficult topic. On the other hand, a
volunteer named Joy is addressed as a
teacher as teaching and serving the children of a
rural community.She travels almost 20km
everyday for the sake of the students learning and
development.
Teaching as your Vocation

 What is the difference between the practices

teaching of Teacher Mark and Joy?
 The main difference lies in their dedication to the
service.
 When someone practices teaching as a vocation, they
teach with dedication.
Teaching as your Vocation
A teacher who practices teaching as his vocation
responds to the strong feeling, or calling, for
service, just like the biblical figures ,with utmost
dedication.

In summary, Vocation is only for some who really

dedicated not just to work but also to serve other
people.
TEACHING AS
YOUR MISSION
“HERE IS A TEST TO FIND OUT WHETHER YOUR
MISSION IN LIFE IS COMPLETE. IF YOU'RE ALIVE, IT
ISN'T."

- RICHARD BACH
Teaching as a Mission

 Etymology of the word “ mission "

- comes from the Latin word “ misio " which means “
to send ".
- The Webster's New Collegiate Dictionary defines
mission as “ task assigned ".
- It gives us the word ” apostle ".The one who are sent.
Teaching as your Mission

• Every teacher has its own unique mission to

accomplish

• We are expected to contribute to the betterment of

this world in our unique way
TEACHING AS YOUR
PROFESSION
“The term professional is one of the most exalted in
the English Language, denoting as it does, long and
arduous years of preparation, a striving for
excelence, a dedication to the public, and
commitment to moral and ethical values".

-Hermogenes P. Pabre, Ph.D

Teaching as your Profession
• You must be willing to go through a period of
preparation and a continuing professional
development.
• You must strive for excelence, commit your self to
moral, and ethical and religious and dedicate
yourself to public service.
• Type of work that needs special training or a
particular skill, often one that is respected because
it involves a high level of education.
The “ pwede na" mentality vs
excellence
• If we stick to this complacent mentality, excellence
elude us

• DON'T SETTLE FOR LESS! STRIVE FOR EXCELLENCE

 “Pwede na Mentality" - the right kind of
contentment demands you try your best while
accepting your limitations.Unfortunately, many
Filipinos are always appealing to the idea of Pwede
Na Yan until the situation worsens leading to several
failures. It's just like you don't fix a little leak until the
situation gets really bad.

 The mentality if Pwede Na Yan means, “ Oh that will

already do" even if improvement can still be done.
