Introduction
Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) was established in
1997 as an independent, international non-profit “You can’t manage what you can’t measure”
organization, based in The Netherlands, Amsterdam.
The aim is to support global businesses and
organizations to take responsibility for their
impacts.
GRI provides joint reporting software, tools, and
format.
The GRI Report (G4 Reporting Guidelines – GRI
2016 Standard) permits companies to compare
and analyze their progress with local or
international organizations.
Typical terms used in the reports include
“sustainability,” “responsibility,” “accountability,” or
“citizenship”.

Significance of GRI Reporting
Promoting transparency between the stakeholders and the companies by engaging stakeholders
• Stakeholder examples: Investors, employees, suppliers, regulators, customers, general public, and government
authorities.
• Thus, allowing stakeholders to fully understand the core values of the organization and also their tangible and
intangible assets.
• As a result of the transparency, trust is strengthened with stakeholders, which benefits the company and
improves their reputation and loyalty.
Risk Management Tool
• Assists companies to identify and prioritize the risks and opportunities internally associated with their business;
I.e. Mitigation Strategy. Followed by external disclosures and transparency.
• Clarifies the environmental safety risks and helps organizations abide by social and governmental laws.
Indicator for the company’s long term success (Financially and Non-Financially)
• Compels companies to revise their strategies into adopting a more adaptive and resilient strategy.
Operation Efficiency
• Improving returns on capital, which often means reducing operating costs through improved natural-resource
management (such as energy use and waste).
• Driving down costs by systematically managing their value chains.
• Improving employee retention or motivation through sustainability activities.
