ORTHOGRAPHIC

DRAWING
LESSON 6: By A.S.SEMU
Orthographic Projection
(First Angle and Third Angle)
 Orthographic projection is the solution to the biggest problem that a draughts
person has to solve – how to draw, with sufficient clarity, a three-dimensional
object on a two dimensional plane.
 The drawing must show quite clearly the detailed outlines of all the faces and
these outlines must be fully dimensioned.
 Orthographic projection allow a draughtsman to show the exact form, shape
and sizes of solids objects
Orthographic Projection
(First Angle and Third Angle) [Continued]

 Orthographic projection has two forms:

i. first angle orthographic projection
ii. third angle orthographic projection
 The angles are differentiated in regards to the orthogonal planes
QUESTION CHALLENGE: How can the figure below
be portrayed in 2 D (Orthographic Projection) ?
ORTHOGONAL PLANES
ORTHOGRAPHIC PROJECTION
First angle orthographic projection.

 with first angle projection, what you see from the left you draw on the right,
what you see from the right you draw on the left and what you see from
above you draw below.
First angle orthographic projection.

Third angle orthographic projection.

 with third angle projection, what you see from the left you draw on the left,
what you see from the right you draw on the right and what you see from
above you draw above.
Third angle orthographic projection

Third angle orthographic projection

Exercise

1. Draw the figure below in your own reasonable dimensions in first angle
orthographic projection.
Practice Work

1. Figure 1 shows the elevation of a 20 mm square prism 50 mm long resting

with one of its corners on the HP. Draw, full size, the following views and
show all the hidden detail.
(a) The given elevation.
(b) An EE looking in the direction of arrow E .
(c) A plan projected beneath view (a).
