GPRS Evolution PH 2

General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) is a packet-based mobile data service that allows users to access the internet and corporate intranets using their mobile device; it provides higher data transmission rates than previous wireless data services and supports applications like email, web browsing, file transfers, information services, e-commerce, and multimedia messaging. GPRS has evolved over several generations to increase speeds from 9.6 kbps initially to several megabits per second with 4G technologies like LTE, allowing mobile users to enjoy more data-intensive applications.

What is GPRS?
 GPRS Stands For General Packet Radio
Services
 GPRS=GSM + VAS
 Packet switching principle
 Data is sent in the form of packets
 Speed of the data sending & reception will
vary with GPRS Generation
 Requires major H/W & S/W changes in the
present 2G GSM N/W
GPRS

GPRS is a data service for GSM

European standard digital cellular service.
 It is a packet-switched mobile data service
European Telecommunications Standards
Institute (ETSI) specified GPRS as an
overlay to the existing GSM network to
provide packet data services.
High Speed Circuit Switched Data (HSCSD)
has data rates up to 57.6 kbps (4 TS with
14.4 kbps)

In GPRS
One user can occupy more than one timeslot
More than one user can be on a single
timeslot.
Maximum data rate of 171.2 kbps could be
achieved. (8 TS with 21.4 kbps).

 End-to-end connection (call) Resources are shared between

establishment needed different user sessions, not dedicated

 Dedicated resources for one user are reserved Resources are requested on demand,
during call establishment. Only 30 - 40% of more efficient use
resources are effectively used for speech
transfer
•Packets are not sent in real time
 Speech is transferred in real time. Speech does buffering and delay
not accept delays
 Error correction and detection
 Errors in transmission are not so critical for possible
speech
 Charging is usually based on
 Charging is usually based on time volume (number of packets)

Key Features

 The always online feature

 Removes the dial-up process, making applications
only one click away.
 An upgrade to existing systems
 Operators do not have to replace their equipment;
rather, GPRS is added on top of the existing
infrastructure.
 An integral part of future 3G systems
 GPRS is the packet data core network for 3G
systems
The operator benefits of GPRS are:
Optimal support for packet switched traffic.
Can join the Internet boom with true IP
connectivity
The possibility to offer new, innovative
services.
New user segments will become accessible
The ability to profit with idle capacity
Many users can use time-slot simultaneously
It is economical as it supports multiple users
on the same channel(s)
Profitable to the operator (value added service,
efficient use of channels)
Packet based applications are given wide
mobile support
Reuse of existing network infrastructure
The end user benefits are:
New market segments such as telemetry of electric
meters will become accessible
Applications will be user-friendly with a seamless
on-line network connection independent of time
and place.
All existing TCP/IP-based applications can be used
GPRS offers very fast session set-up and the end
user can stay on-line for long periods paying only
for the capacity used (depending on the billing
model) GPRS makes using existing applications
easier and enables new applications
High bit rates in peak-hour, and uncompressed
data rates of 171.2 kbps

Traffic Information
APPLICATION OVERVIEW

This service both collects and distributes traffic information. Traffic information
is very important need for city dwellers. Systems can estimate traffic
information by sampling mobiles in automobiles on freeways anonymously to
determine average velocity of vehicles. If this is not possible in locataion more
static information can be collected from city authorities. All this information is
mapped and sent to mobile users who request it.

• Stickiness : Daily traffic info. pushed during

rush hours via SMS/MMS

• Most people need to know the current

traffic sitution on their route.

• Hosting: Operator / ISP

• WAP/Web/MMS/SMS: yes/yes/yes/yes

• Devices supported: - All devices

• Commerically used worldwide
