Introduction to Research
• “A scientific and systematic search for pertinent information on a specific topic.”
• “Research is an art of scientific investigation.”
• “A careful investigation or inquiry specially through search for new facts in any
branch of knowledge.”
• “Systematized effort to gain new knowledge.”
• According to Clifford Woody: Research comprises - defining and redefining
problems, formulating hypothesis or suggested solutions; collecting, organising and
evaluating data; making deductions and reaching conclusions; and at last carefully
testing the conclusions to determine whether they fit the formulating hypothesis.
• The term ‘Research’ refers to the systematic method consisting of enunciating the
problem, formulating a hypothesis, collecting the facts or data, analysing the facts and
reaching certain conclusions either in the form of solutions(s) towards the concerned
problem or in certain generalisations for some theoretical formulation.

What is Research?

Research is a process of systematic inquiry that entails

collection of data; documentation of critical information; and
analysis and interpretation of that data/information, in
accordance with suitable methodologies set by specific
professional fields and academic disciplines.

What is Research Methodology?
• Research methodology refers to the methods and techniques used to
effectively portray the research.
• Research methodology is a way of explaining how a researcher
intends to carry out their research. It's a logical, systematic plan to
resolve a research problem.
• A methodology details a researcher's approach to the research to
ensure reliable, valid results that address their aims and objectives.
• It encompasses what data they're going to collect and where from, as
well as how it's being collected and analyzed.

Need of Research Methodology or Why RM?
• A research methodology gives research legitimacy and
provides scientifically sound findings.
• It also provides a detailed plan that helps to keep
researchers on track, making the process smooth,
effective and manageable.
• A researcher's methodology allows the reader to
understand the approach and methods used to reach
conclusions.

Benefits of Research Methodology
• Fellow researchers who want to replicate the research have enough
information to do so.
• Researchers who receive criticism can refer to the methodology and
explain their approach.
• It can help provide researchers with a specific plan to follow
throughout their research.
• The methodology design process helps researchers select the correct
methods for the objectives.
• It allows researchers to document what they intend to achieve with
the research from the outset.

Research - Objectives
• The purpose of research is to discover answers to questions through the application of
scientific procedures.
• The main aim of research is to find out the truth which is hidden and which has not been
discovered as yet.
• Though each research study has its own specific purpose, we may think of research
objectives as falling into a number of following broad groupings:
• 1. To gain familiarity with a phenomenon or to achieve new insights into it (exploratory or formulative
research studies);
• 2. To portray accurately the characteristics of a particular individual, situation or a group (descriptive
research studies);
• 3. To determine the frequency with which something occurs or with which it is associated with
something else (diagnostic research studies);
• 4. To test a hypothesis of a causal relationship between variables (hypothesis-testing research studies).

Knowledge Economy
• Knowledge is the understanding of a subject.
• A knowledge economy is defined by the value of knowledge and how
it rewards intellect and respects knowledge and intellectual property as
a commodity.
• Research and development is centerpiece in this economy that has
high regard for innovation.
• The system amplifies knowledge-intensive activities, which are duties
that require an extensive degree of knowledge to complete. Duties like
these include banking, research, and accounting.

Knowledge Economy
• The knowledge economy, is an economy dependent on
human capital and intangible assets, such as proprietary
technology.
• The knowledge economy has placed the IT/ICT industries at
the forefront of overall economic growth.
• Skill sets that include data analysis, creating and working
with financial models, and the ability to innovate are highly
sought in the modern economy.

Knowledge Economy
• The knowledge economy describes the contemporary commercialization of
science and academic scholarship.
• Innovation based on research is commodified via patents and other forms of
intellectual property.
• The knowledge economy lies at the intersection of private entrepreneurship,
academia, and government-sponsored research.
• Knowledge-related industries represent a large share of the activity in most
highly developed countries.
• A knowledge economy depends on skilled labor and education, strong
communications networks, and institutional structures that incentivize
innovation.
