Tidal Energy Real 2

Tidal energy harnesses the natural energy of ocean tides and can be captured through tidal barrages, tidal fences, and tidal turbines. Tidal barrages use dams and gates to capture potential energy, tidal fences exploit fast ocean currents, and tidal turbines resemble wind turbines operating underwater. The Philippines has potential tidal energy sites like Hinatuan Passage and San Bernardino Strait. Tidal energy is a renewable source but has challenges including high costs, limited suitable locations, and potential environmental impacts.

Tidal Energy

AB ELECTRIFICATION AND CONTROL SYSTEM (ABE14)

Presentd by: Bayobo, Leader Deano, Dalay, Gumabay
Tidal power Plant Components
Dam – The function of dam is to form a barrier
between the sea and the basin.
Sluice ways – These are used to fill the basin
during the high tide or empty the basin during
the low tide, as per operational requirement.
Power house – It consists of turbines, electric
generators and other auxiliary equipment.

Korea (Largest Tidal Powerplant)
3 ways to get Tidal Energy
1. Tidal Barrage
- It uses long walls, dams, sluice
gates or tidal locks to capture and
store the potential energy of the
ocean
3 ways to get Tidal Energy
2. Tidal Fences

Directly exploits fast flowing

underwater ocean currents for
energy generation. It composed of
individual vertical-axis turbines that
are mounted together within a single
fence like structure. Its purpose is to
harness the kinetic energy of the
underwater tides.

3. Tidal Turbine

It has shorter blades compared to

wind turbines but are also stronger
than them. Tidal turbines are great
for places with big and strong tides.
A Relative of Tidal Energy: Wave
Energy
Using buoys that float in the
waves is one method for
capturing wave energy. The
buoys are anchored to the
ocean floor, and as waves
raise and lower the floating
device, electricity is generated
in an electric coil.
A Relative of Tidal Energy: Wave
Energy
Using a surface following
device is another method for
capturing wave energy. An
articulated ‘snake' floats on
the ocean surface. Its joints
are connected to hydraulic
rams that move with the
wave motion, forcing
hydraulic fluid to move small
turbines that power
generators
Harnessing Tidal Energy: Tidal
Stream System
Underwater turbines are
anchored to the sea floor so
the moving water from tidal
currents can rotate the
blades. Just like wind
turbines, the rotating motion
of the blades generates
electricity which can be sent
to the utility grid.
Harnessing Tidal Energy: Tidal
Stream System
Lots of underwater turbine
designs are being prototyped.
The Evopod began testing in
June 2008. It uses a tether
rather than a rigid anchor.
The turbine is mounted on a
floating, semi-submerged
structure. This design is
easier to maintain and can
capture the fastest tidal
currents which are just below
the surface.
Harnessing Tidal Energy: Tidal
Stream System
The world’s first commercial tidal
stream generator is SeaGen
which was installed in Northern
Ireland’s Strangford Lough in
April 2008 and started
generating electricity for the grid
in July 2008. SeaGen is an axial
turbine, a tall tower bolted to the
seabed. The blades can capture
the motion of tides going in as
well as out. There are
discussions to build entire tidal
farms using turbines like these.
Tidal Energy
In simple terms, a tidal energy
works via a turbine works like a
wind turbine, with blades rotating
12-to-18 times a minute depending
on tide strength.

ADVANTAGES & DISADVANTAGES
OF TIDAL ENERGY
ADVANTAGES
Clean and Renewable does’nt produce greenhouse gases
efficiency is around 80% than coal and solar and wind power
does’st require any type of fuel to run
Predictable and Reliable
Long-lasting Equipment
the large density of water almost 1000 greater than in air in very
large amount of energy to get out of the tidal current Effective even if
the speed is low
DISADVANTAGES
Environmental Impact
High Construction Costs
Scarcity of Suitable Locations, there are very few suitable location for
the construction of plants
Inconsistent
influences aquatic life adversively and can disrupt migration of fish
the actuak generation is for a short period of time, the tides only
happen twice a day so electricity can only be produced that time.
places where tidal energy is producedare far away from the places it
is consumed. this transmission is expensive and difficult.
