Verb Tenses
-tells you when a person did

The Simple Tenses

Agreement
Objectives:
Identify the basic rules of the Subject-verb Agreement;
and
Use the rules of subject-verb agreement in writing
sentences;
Subject-Verb Agreement
Basic Rules
Subject-verb Agreement:
-refers to the relationship between the subject and
the predicate of the sentence.
Rule #1
A subject will come before a phrase beginning with
of.

Examples:
SS SV
The list of prescriptions is in her purse.

The teacher and a group of students are working


together for the experiment.
Rule #2
Two singular subjects connected by or, either/or. or
neither/nor require a singular verb.

Examples:
Radiologic Technology nor Medical Technology is
part of my course choice.

Either mathematics or science is my favorite subject.


Rule #3
The verb in an or, either/or, or neither/nor sentence
agrees with the noun or pronoun closest to it.

Examples:
Neither Princess nor all RCI students are allowed to
go to school.

Either generic medicines or Biogesic is curing my


headache.
Rule #4
As a rule, use a plural verb with two or more subjects
when they are connected by and.

Examples:
Hamlet and Macbeth are books written by William
Shakespeare.
Diagnosing and treating patients' injuries are
physiotherapies part of a specialization.
Rule #5A
Sometimes the subject is separated from the verb by such
words as along with, as well as, besides, not, etc.. These
words are not part of the subject, rather use a singular verb
when the subject is singular.

Example:

The politician, along with the newsman, is


expected shortly.
Rule #5B
Parentheses are not part of the subject.

Examples:
Joe (and his friend) was in the attic.

Students (and a teacher) were coming.


Rule #6
Sentences beginning with here or there, the true subject
follows the verb.

Examples:
There are a lot of challenges you need to face
before you can graduate.

Rule #7
Use a singular verb with distances, periods of time,
sums of money, etc., when considered as a unit.

Examples:
It is ten miles away from home.
Five million dollars is still cheap for her.
Rule #8
With words that indicate portions –e.g., a lot, a majority,
some, all--- are guided by the noun after of.

Examples:
Some of the medicine is already expired.

The majority of my classmates are familiar with


each other.
