1st Quarter - Generating Patterns & Arithmetic Sequence

The document contains a daily prayer, review questions on patterns, and a lesson on generating patterns and arithmetic sequences. It includes objectives of understanding and identifying sequences, arithmetic sequences, and deriving the general nth term and other properties of arithmetic sequences. Examples of different patterns and arithmetic sequences are provided along with practice exercises for students to determine patterns, common differences, and missing terms in sequences.

FIRST QUARTER
Class of Ma’am Maquiraya
Dear God, we pray that you will guide
us in everything we do today. Please be in
our lessons and help us to concentrate and
learn. May our school be a place of
happiness, friendship and learning.
Please give us the courage to do what is
right. Help us live in peace and act
respectfully, giving us strength to be the
best we can be. This we pray, Amen.

PATTERN
A pattern constitute a set of numbers or objects in which all
the members are related to each other by a specific rule.
Each item below shows a pattern. What’s Next?

TOPIC:

Generating Patterns
Objectives
:
At the end of the session, you are expected to:
1. Generate patterns
2. Illustrate arithmetic sequence;
3. Define and identify sequence and arithmetic sequence; and
4. Determine the nth terms (an), number of terms (n) and the
common difference (d) of an arithmetic sequence.
SEQUENCE
A sequence is a list of numbers or objects which follow fixed
pattern or with specific rule.

4 7 10 13 16 19
1st Term 2nd Term 3rd Term 4th Term 5th Term 6th Term
a1 a2 a3 a4 a5 a6

Each number in the sequence is called a TERM.

Observe the following, what are the next three terms in the
sequence?
5 7 9 11 13 15
What is the number pattern? Add two (2) to the preceding term

A rule is a way to find every term in each number pattern

What are the next three terms in the sequence?

99 95 91 87 83 79
What is the rule?
Subtracting 4 to the preceding term

4 8 16 32 64 128
     Multiplying by two
What is the rule?
What are the next three terms in the sequence?

a d g j m p
skipping two letter from the preceding letter
What is the rule?

What are the missing letters in the sequence?

r b

orange green indigo v
yellow violet
Use the starting number and rule to create a numerical sequence.
Start with 8 and use the rule ‘add 3’.

11 ___,
8, ___, 17 ____,
14 ____, 20 …
Start with 60 and use the rule ‘divide by 2’
𝟏𝟓 𝟏𝟓
60, ___, 15 ____, ____, …
30 ___, 𝟐 𝟒
List the first four (4) terms of the sequence given the rule an = 3n – 2.
     Rule: an = 3n – 2
1 term
st
2 term
nd 3rd term 4th term

The first 4 terms of the sequence given the rule a n = 3n – 2

are 1, 4, 7,and 10.
Find the 3rd and the 7th term of the sequence whose nth term is
an = .
     Rule: an =

3rd term 7th term

Write the general rule (nth term) of the sequence.
1. 1, 5, 9, 13, …

2. 7, 13, 19, 25, 31, …

3. 11, 8, 5, 2, -1, …

Video presentation on Deriving the general rule  an  of a sequence

( arithmetic sequence) https://youtu.be/V02nV_qR_xQ
Solution: 1. 1, 5, 9, 13, …
       a. The sequence 1, 5, 9, 13, 17, …… have a constant
increase which is 4. Thus,  4n is a part of the general rule.
n 1 2 3 4 5
an 1 5 9 13 17
4n 4 8 12 16 20
Notice that when 4n is subtracted from a n  , all terms differ by – 3,
thus we add -3 to complete the rule for this sequence. Hence , the
general rule is  an = 4n – 3
2. 7, 13, 19, 25, 31, …
Solution:
                b. The sequence 7, 13, 19, 25, 31, … have a constant
increase which is 6. Thus 6n is a part of the general rule.
n 1 2 3 4 5
an 7 13 19 25 31
6n 6 12 18 24 30
Notice that when 6n is subtracted from an , the result is 1. Thus
the general rule is an = 6n + 1
3. 11, 8, 5, 2, -1, …
Solution:
                    c. The sequence 11, 8, 5, 2, -1…… have a constant
decrease which is 3. Thus, -3n is a part of the general rule.

n 1 2 3 4 5
an 11 8 5 2 -1
-3n -3 -6 -9 -12 -15
Notice that when -3n is subtracted from a n , the result is 14. Thus
the general rule is an = -3n + 14
