Dear God, we pray that you will guide
us in everything we do today. Please be in
our lessons and help us to concentrate and
learn. May our school be a place of
happiness, friendship and learning.
Please give us the courage to do what is
right. Help us live in peace and act
respectfully, giving us strength to be the
best we can be. This we pray, Amen.

ARITHMETIC SEQUENCE
is a sequence or progression in which each term is
obtained by adding a fixed number to the preceding term.
The fixed number is called the common difference (d).
Objectives
:
At the end of the session, you are expected to:

1. Derive the nth term of an arithmetic sequence

2. Determine the common difference and the n th term of an
arithmetic sequence
3. Insert arithmetic means between two terms of arithmetic
sequence
4. Solve problems involving arithmetic sequence

Example 1: 2, 9, 16, ... a15?

Solution: an = a1 + (n - 1)d
2 15 7
a1 = ___ ; n = ___ ; d = ___
a15 = 2 +(15 - 1)(7) (substitute the values from the formula)
a15 = 2 + (14)(7) Note: Identify the
following information:
a15 = 2 + 98
a15 = 100 first term (a1), missing
term (n) and the
common difference (d)
Example 2: In the arithmetic sequence 3, 9, 15, …. Find a 12?

Solution: an = a1 + (n - 1)d
3 12 6
a1 = ___ ; n = ___ ; d = ___
a12 = 3 +(12 - 1)(6) (substitute the values from the formula)
a12 = 3 + (11)(6)
a12 = 3 + 66
a12 = 69
Example 3: Find the 20th term of the arithmetic sequence
15, 13, 11, 9, ….

Solution: an = a1 + (n - 1)d
15 20 –2
a1 = ___ ; n = ___ ; d = ___
a20 = 15 + (20 – 1)(–2)
a20 = 15 + (19 )(–2)
a20 = 15 + (–38)
a20 = – 23
Example 4: Write the first five terms of the arithmetic
sequence whose first term is -5 and common difference of 6.

-5 ___,
___, 1 ____,
7 ____, 19
13 ____
Solution: a1 = -5
a2 = a1 + d = -5 + 6 = 1
a3 = a1 + 2d = -5 + 2(6) = 7
a4 = a1 + d = -5 + 3(6) = 13
a5 = a1 + d = -5 + 4(6) = 19
Example 5: Insert three arithmetic means between 8 and 16.
Illustration: 8, ____, ____, ____, 16
Solution: (Solve for the common difference)
an = a1 + (n - 1)d
16 = 8 + (5 – 1)d (substitute a1 = 8 and a5 = 16)
16 = 8 + 4d
16 – 8 = 4d
8 = 4d (divide both side by 4)
d=2
Add the common difference (2) to get the succeeding term;
therefore, 8, ____,
10 ____,
12 ____,

ARITHMETIC MEAN
the number/s between two arithmetic extremes are called
arithmetic means.

Arithmetic ARITHMETIC MEAN Arithmetic

Extreme Extreme
Example 6: What is the arithmetic mean between 10 and 24?

Illustration: 10, ____, 24

Solution: Using the average formula; = 17

Example 7: What is the arithmetic mean between 31 and 55?

Illustration: 31, ____, 55

Solution: Using the average formula; = 43
Example 8: Insert four arithmetic means between 21 and -9.
Illustration: 21, ____, ____, ____, ____, -9
a1 a6
Solution: (Solve for the common difference)
an = a1 + (n - 1)d
a6 = a1 + 5d
-9 = 21 + 5d
-9 -21 = 5d
-30 = 5d
d = -6
Add the common difference (-6) to get the succeeding term;
therefore, 15, 9, 3, -3 are the arithmetic means.

Arithmetic Series
ARITHMETIC SERIES
If the terms of a sequence is added, the result is known as a series.

The sequence: 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, …

Gives the series: 5 + 7 + 9 + 11 + 13 + …

The indicated sum of an arithmetic sequence is called

arithmetic series.

Example 4: Mrs. Santos began teaching with a salary of
P8,000 a month and increases of P600 annually. How much
will be her salary in ten years?

Solution: Formula: an = a1 + (n – 1)d

Given: a1 = 8 000, d = 600, and n = 10
a10 = 8000 + (10 – 1)600
a10 = 8000 + (9)600
a10 = 8000 + 5400
a10 = 13 400
