Major forms of literature

POETRY PROSE DRAMA


POETRY
a form of literary art that uses aesthetic and
rhythmic qualities of language to evoke
meanings in addition to, or in place of,
prosaic ostensible meaning (ordinary
intended meaning).
PROSE
a form of literature that possesses
ordinary syntax and natural speech rather
than rhythmic structure; in which regard,
along with its measurement in sentences
rather than lines, it differs from poetry.
DRAMA

- literature intended
for performance.
Analyzing literature
Analysis- The process or result of
identifying the parts of a whole
and their relationships to one
another.
Elements to analyze in a literary
work:
Language - a system of
communicating ideas and
feelings through signs,
sounds, gestures, and/or
marks
Mood - The emotion or
feeling that readers get
from reading the words
on page.
Conflict/Problem - A
struggle or clash between
opposing characters,
forces, or emotions.
Narration - The process
of recounting a sequence
of events, real or
imagined.
Plot - The structure of a story. The sequence in
which the author arranges events in a story.
-The structure often includes exposition,
rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution.
-The plot may have a protagonist who is
opposed by an antagonist, creating what is called
conflict.
Characterization - The
method an author uses to
reveal characters and their
various personalities.
Setting - The time
and place in which a
story unfolds.
Theme - A central idea or
message of a piece of writing;
a major idea broad enough to
cover the entire scope of a
literary work.
Point of View - The
position of the narrator in
relation to the plot of a piece
of literature.

BEOWULF
Beowulf is an epic poem which deals
with war and adventure. It is said to be
the greatest poem ever written in a
modern European language four
centuries before the Norman Conquest.
Beowulf shows an interplay of Christian
and pegan beliefs. The original writer
remains unknown.
