Shadow Presentation Photo

Shadows can add contrast, drama, and focus to photographs. They direct the viewer's eye and reveal texture and form. Photographers sometimes try to avoid shadows, but when used correctly, shadows make interesting photographs. The type of lighting, whether natural or artificial, affects the look of shadows. Natural light from the sun usually makes shadows outdoors, while artificial light comes from indoor sources. A photo's lighting position impacts shadows, and natural light quality varies by time of day. Shadows can enhance photos by being the subject, distorting, interacting with subjects, or casting patterns on surfaces. Assignments encourage shooting various shadow types with natural and artificial light.

time trying to get rid of shadows
with proper lighting but when used

Any irregularities in the shape of the subject or

form of what the shadow is cast onto.
Light and Shadows
When you think about
shadows, you must think
about light. Lighting is
extremely important to
shadows and how your
shadow will look
depends on lightening.
Types of Lighting
Natural Light:
This is light from
the sun. Usually
this will be seen
outdoors, but it can
also come inside
through windows
to make interesting
shadows.
Types of Lighting
Artificial Light:
This is light that
comes from anything
other than the sun.
There are many types
of artificial lighting
and many ways to
light, but think about
where you source of
light comes from.
Lighting
• Think about where your light source is coming
from. The light source can come from the
front, back, sides, top, or below the subject.
• When using natural light, think about what
time of day you will have the best light and
the worst.
• If shooting at night, you should use a tripod or
photos may turn out blurry. You do not want
blurry photos!

Images from around the world…

There are two major types
Shadows and Silhouettes
SILHOUETTES
• SHOOT EARLY OR LATE IN THE DAY. In order to capture a clear
silhouette, you'll need the background to be brighter than your
subject. The best way to do this is to shoot at the beginning or the end
of the day. The optimum time to shoot a silhouette is when the sun is
low in the sky – either when it is rising or setting.
• Think how these images were made
• How they loo for light
• How they create message
• How you see world around you….
