Lica Ic Regulators

IC voltage regulators are three-terminal devices that provide a constant DC output voltage independent of input voltage, load current, and temperature. Fixed voltage regulators like the 78xx and 79xx series provide a preset output voltage, while adjustable regulators like the LM317 allow the output voltage to be varied over a range. Key parameters for regulators include line and load regulation, ripple rejection, and maximum output current. Regulators offer advantages of easy use and simplified power supply design but have limitations such as fixed output voltage and limited current range.

IC VOLTAGE REGULATORS

What is the need for IC ?

A circuit may have many

components,
For example, 555 timer has 2
comparators, 2 transistors etc..
Logic gates for example, basic TTL
NAND gate has 3 transistors
IC VOLTAGE REGULATORS

IC voltage regulators are three

terminal devices that provide a
constant DC output voltage that
is independent of the input
voltage, output load current and
temperature..
Types of IC regulators

Fixed voltage regulators Adjustable voltage regulators

Provide constant DC output Output voltage can be varied

voltage. over a certain range of voltages
Example: 78xx and 79xx Example:LM317,LM337
Fixed voltage regulators

78xx series regulators

 3 terminal positive fixed regulators
 Voltages available in 78xx series
5,6,8,12,15,18,24
79xx series regulators
 3 terminal negative fixed voltages
 Voltages available in 79xx series
-2,-5,-5.2,-15,-18,-24
78xx series regulator

Ci -to cancel inductive

effect. It prevents
oscillations
C0 -to improve transient
response. It improves
frequency response
Characteristics

 Output voltage-Vo: Regulated output voltage

 Input voltage-Vin: Unregulated voltage. Must be at least 2V more
than Vo
 Iomax-Load output current varies from 0-rated max
 Provided a heat sink (absorbs heat without change of temperature)
to get maximum output current.
Thermal shutdown:
The temperature sensor in IC
turns it off when the
temperature is too high i.e.,
1250-1500.
Pass transistor:
External transistor used to
provide additional current
capacity for an electronic
circuit.
Performance parameters

 Line Regulation:
%change in output voltage for a change in input voltage.
Expressed in mv or %of o/p voltage
Typical value for 7805 is 3mv
 Load Regulation:
change in output voltage for a change in load current.
Expressed in mv or %of V0.
Typical value for 7805 is 15mv for a load current variation of 5mA to 1.5Amp
 Ripple Rejection:
IC regulator reduces amount of ripple voltage in the output.
Expressed in decibels.
Typical value for 7805 is 78dB.
7805 as current source

 Apply KCL at node A

IL=IR+IQ
IQ is quiescent current
For 7805, IQ = 4.5mA
IR = VR/R
=>IL=VR/R+IQ
As VR and IQ are constant, R is
selected to provide sufficient current.
79xx series regulator

 These are similar to 78 series

just the regulated output is
negative.
 The capacitors are used to
provide additional filters
 Here pin1 is ground and pin2
is I/p opposite to 78xx
Advantages of fixed IC Regulators

 Easy to use
 Simplify power supply design
 Low cost
 Over current protection
 Thermal overload protection
Disadvantages

 Limited current ranges

 No short circuit protection
 Maximum I/p voltage cannot exceed 35v
 Often need external capacitors for stability
 Output voltage is fixed.
