DESIGN DISSERTATION

VIBHAV A. CHAVAN

1.MULTI-MODAL TRANSIT HUB
A) ABSTRACT:-
Transportation is the spine of any city. It serves the most basic necessity for the city. It is a very important Infrastructure enabling Urban
Mobility. Transport conditions in a country reflects its type of development. Multi Modal Transit Hub is a place where passengers & goods are
exchanged between different vehicles or transport modes. Multi Modal Transit Hubs are very important in the present scenario to cater daily
travelling needs, controlling use of private vehicles, reducing traffic congestion, promoting use of public transport, increasing safety on roads,
promoting commercial establishment along with it & to boost city’s public transport network.
AIM:-
People and goods must be mobile to ensure access to employment and basic services, for the productive economy to run smoothly and for cities to
be efficient and liveable.
B) OBJECTIVE:-
1) To create a nodal integration between the transit hub and public space serving as a free space for the people residing around the transit hub.
2) To promote usage of public transport by integrating different transport services & making public mobility easy & affordable by different class of
people.
3) Integrating different road services like Bus,Taxis, Rickshaws,Metro,Railways etc to make interchange between them easy
C) SCOPE :-
The mega cities of India are facing heavy traffic congestion problems and having one third population as migrant, creates the heavy traffic. So to
study and analyse that how it can be more helpful in reducing traffic congestion by integrating different modes at a single place, so that if a person
get a exit from the Transit hub then he directly go to his destination, and not create the haphazard movement around the terminal and in the city.
LOCATION :- WADALA,MUMBAI
• The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA)
has firmed up plans to build a multi-modal transport hub in Wadala
spread across 18.44 hectares.
• The transport hub once completed will enable passengers to commute
with multiple modes of transportation and interchange all under one roof.
• It will in turn give boost to the state government’s pending proposal to
transform Wadala into a commercial hub.
• With the construction of the multi-modal transport hub, the state
government aims to create 1.2 lakh jobs in the different public transport
system that will be introduced in Wadala, said a MMRDA official.
• The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA)
has recently secured approval from Brihamni Mumbai Electricity Supply
and Transport (BEST) for setting up an integrated transport hub (ITH).
• The Transport Hub is set to come up at Wadala, where residents would be
able to use the services provided by BEST, Inter-State Bus Terminal,
Monorail and Metro 4 — connecting Wadala to Kasarwadavali in Thane.
WADALA TO BECOME NEXT COMMERCIAL HUB
• The dwindling land resources of Bandra-Kurla Complex have forced the Mumbai Metropolitan Region
Development Authority (MMRDA) to look at new avenues for creating business hubs in the city.
• The need for creating alternate growth centers is necessary as commercial centers such as BKC are
running out of land.
• BKC comes under the airport funnel zone, a restricted region, the developers were unable to increase the
height of the buildings. However, such will not be the case while undertaking the development of Wadala
land. The lessee will be provided four Floor Space Index(FSI) for the development of land here.
• Infrastructure projects like the monorail, connectivity of the Eastern Freeway and the upcoming Metro 4
(Wadala-Thane-Kasarvadavali) will increase the area’s real-estate potential.
• Four global consultancy firms and eight Indian companies have shown interest in the project to transform
Wadala into an international finance and business centre.
• Besides, the authority is in talks with the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply & Transport (BEST) owner of
Anik bus depot and merge the plot with the notified area. Apart from developing a second business hub, it
will undertake a transit-oriented development since Monorail, Metro, BEST, and inter-state bus terminal
are already located here.

planned to finish by the end of 2014.

weave through some of the most dense and congested parts of mumbai.
• Once functional, it was expected that 1.25 lakh people would use the services daily.
• MMRDA officials had claimed that the monorail would help reduce nearly 28,000
taxi and rickshaw trips and help in taking off the nearly 25,000 cars that traveled on
this stretch.
• The monorail, which took a decade to come up at a cost of rs 2,700 crore, serves
only 7,000 travellers daily as of july.
