PERCEPTION

Organisational Behaviour & Behavioural Psychology

BBA-LLB
Semester 1
CONCEPT OF PERCEPTION

• It is the process of interpreting

something that we see or hear in
our mind and use it later to judge
and give a verdict on a situation,
person, group etc.
PROCESS OF PERCEPTION

• Detecting/receiving the stimuli.

• Selecting the received stimuli (also known as
perceptual selectivity)
• Organizing (also known as perceptual
organization)
• Interpreting
FACTORS AFFECTING PERCEPTION

• Perceptual learning: Based on past experiences or any

special training that we get.
• Mental set: Set refers to preparedness or readiness to
receive some sensory input.
• Motives and needs: Our motives and needs will
definitely influence our perception.
• Cognitive styles: People are said to differ in the ways they
characteristically process the information.
ATTRIBUTION THEORY OF PERCEPTION
According to Heider (1958), perception is
attributed to two factors:
1. Internal
2. External
INTERNAL ATTRIBUTION

The process of assigning the cause of

behavior to some internal characteristic,
rather than to outside forces.
Example: Consistency of behaviour (greeting
colleagues with smile every morning) is
attributed to internal perception (colleagues
are friends).
EXTERNAL ATTRIBUTION

• The process of assigning the cause of behavior to some situation or

event outside a person's control.
• Examples:
 Distinctiveness of behaviour (saying “Good Morning” to boss every
morning) is attributed to external perception (the boss holds power).
 Consensus of behaviour (reaching office on time every day) is
attributed to external perception (being late may expend one leave
or portions of salary).
ATTRIBUTION THEORY OF PERCEPTION
(DIAGRAMATIC REPRESENTATION)
MANAGERIAL IMPLICATIONS OF PERCEPTION

• Interpersonal Working Relationship

• Selection of Employees
• Performance Appraisal
• Impression Management
CASE STUDY

• Ajay, 23 year old, fresh MBA with HR, starts his career
has a junior HR executive at Raj Manufacting House. His
boss is a simple B.Com. degree holder with 4 years of
handy experience. He does not like Ajay’s joining the
company and therefore tortures him by different ways.
He wants Ajay to resign so he almost harasses him by
playing politics in background. Ajay comes to know about
this.

• If you were a consultant, what advice would you give

him? What is the reason for the boss’ negative behavior?
Thank You
