Work Life Balance

Introduction
Work-life balance is an ideal situation in which an employee can stabilize their time and energy between the
professional and personal aspects of their life.
Work-life balance is defined as a satisfactory level of involvement between the multiple roles in a person’ life.

In broader sense : Meaningful achievement and enjoyment in all aspects of the person’s life, i.e.

Work,
Family,
Relationships,
Self interest.

A vital factor in achieving a balance is making sure that work does not overwhelm or dominate; and that it does not cause
damage to the individual by way of negative stress

Work-life-Balance Overview :

• It is important to understand that work-life balance


does not mean to devote an equal amounts of time to
paid work and non-paid roles; but is defined as a
satisfactory level of involvement or ‘fit’ between the
multiple roles in a person’s life.

• Is it same for everyone…?


No, varies from individual to individual and varies over time on a daily basis as well over different phases of
life.
Work-life balance is different for each of us because we all have different priorities and different lives .

• To understand work-life balance, it is important to be aware of the different demands upon us and our
personal resources- our time and energy- that we can deploy, to address them.

• With conscious decision-making provides a sense of control over our working arrangements in order to better
accommodate other aspects of our lives, while still benefiting the organizations.

There is no perfect, one-size fit solution to WLB.

Due to unhealthy work life balance, employees face a lot of problems like depression, anxiety, insomnia
and also health issues like pains, diabetes, heart problems and hypertension.

Burnout is a state of physical or emotional exhaustion and is caused when employees work for a long time
and have continues stress. Usually leads to Mental Fatigue / Inefficiency.

Handling Job Burnout by : Mindfulness

Mindfulness is the act of focusing on your breath flow and being intensely aware of what you're sensing and feeling at
every moment, without interpretation or judgment. In a job setting, this practice involves facing situations with
openness and patience.

There are very limited no of males and females who are


working for less than 8 hours.

• 81% males working for 8-10 hours and 16% males


working for 10-12 hours.

• 90% of females working for 8-10 hours and 5% working


for 10-12 hours

Official Stress back to home

78% women carry office tension home, compared to 60 % men.

Organizations can implement various work-life balance initiatives that may assist employees to better balance
their work and family responsibilities, gain improvements in well-being and provide organizational benefits.

Few of the family friendly policies are –

• Flexible Culture - Flexi Working hours / Offer Remote working

• Telecommuting

• Review allocation of duties to ensure achievable workloads

• Job sharing

• Encourage managers to focus on productivity rather than hours
