Magsimula ng pag-aaral tayong mga kabataan
Hindi pa huli ang lahat
Pag-aralan ang kalagayan ng ating lipunan
Iwaksi ang maling kaisipan
Nang mapalaya ang bayan

Magsimula,magsimula kailangan malaman lahat

Lesson 5 Nations and States in the Context of
Globalization
ITS
Recorded Philippine history began in the 13th century
when 10 datus from Borneo, each with a hundred of
his kinsmen, landed in what is now Panay Island in the
Visayas. When the Spanish arrived in 1565, the
Philippines did not have a national identity. Instead,
the archipelago was comprised of hundreds of
territories occupied by different tribal groups who
fought and traded with one another. It was already a
major cultural and trade crossroads. For hundred
years, Chinese, Japanese, Malays and even Hindus
traded here.
The islands of the Philippines are inhabited by a
number of different ethnic groups. The
majority of the population is composed of
ethnolinguistic groups whose languages
are Austronesian also known as Malayo-Polynesian in
origin. Many of these groups
converted to Christianity, particularly the lowland-
coastal groups, and adopted many
foreign elements of culture.
Cebuano, Ilocano, Pangasinense, Kapampangan,
Tagalog, Bicolano, Waray, Surigaono
n, Zamboangueño and Hiligaynon who are also called
Ilonggo are Philippines’ ethnic
groups.
The culture of the Philippines comprises a blend of
traditional Filipino and Spanish
Catholic traditions, with influences from America and
other parts of Asia
In 1935, the Commonwealth of the Philippines
was established with U.S. approval, and Manuel
Quezon was elected the country's first president.
On July 4, 1946, full independence was granted
to the Republic of the Philippines by the United
States.
Fast forward, the Philippines as an independent
state in the conduct of its foreign relations
joined international organizations. Some have
attributed an unprecedented period of peace and
prosperity to globalization as it has spurred
growth and productivity as well as expanding
opportunities for businesses, investors, and
workers.

WHATS NEW
Have you heard of One-China Policy?
It is the diplomatic
acknowledgement of China's
position that there is only one
Chinese government. Under the
policy, the US recognizes and
has formal ties with China rather
than the island of Taiwan, which
China sees as a breakaway
province to be reunified with the
mainland one day.
WHATS NEW
Have you heard of the Kurds who inhabit in
Turkey, Syria, and Iraq?
Kurdish nationalist movements have dreamed of an independent state
ever since the breakup of the Ottoman Empire early last century and the
birth of the modern Middle East. Now, Iraq’s Kurds are taking steps
toward that elusive goal. Preliminary results suggest they voted for
independence in a referendum Monday. Leaders of Iraq’s
semiautonomous Kurdish region say a “yes” verdict will mark the
beginning of a separation process rather than an abrupt splintering from
the rest of the country. Iraq’s national government, as well as the
country’s neighbors -- many with their own restive Kurdish minorities --
opposed the vote and have threatened to undermine moves toward
secession.

● IS PHILIPPINES A STATE?
CONCEPTS OF STATE The term state must satisfy the following
elements: 1. Fixed territory 2. Population 3. Sovereignty/Legitimate
Authority 4. Government Philippines is a state because of Article 1 of
the 1987 constitution defining the national territory. Per 2019 national
census, there are 110 m Filipinos. It has sovereignty as it exercises
ultimate or legitimate authority over the affairs of the government and
has a form of government which is presidential, democratic, republican,
and unitary.
● Sovereignty is one of the indispensable attributes or elements of a
state. It means that a country is independent from
external control and imposes obedience upon its people
through enactment or enforcement of laws. The term
state is a political concept. State is synonymous with the
term country. So, the President if both the head of the
state and the head of the government. Note: • The
absence of one element or more render the concept of
state useless. •.

What I Can Do
I AM A CITIZEN OF THE WORLD!
You represent the nation as person who belongs to the State of the Philippines. To achieve
development in all areas of the country’s affairs, the Philippines has to embark on fostering
relations with countries through globalization which requires mutual cooperation and exchange of
systems that 21st century demands.
Instructions: On a separate sheet of paper, draw yourself as the nation, the Philippine flag in your
heart to symbolize the state, and in your head are as many sprouting bubbles to contain areas of
development that are associated with globalization. This activity is worth twenty (20) points.
Instructions: Your answer to the statement below shall include your position either
you are in favor or against globalization. After doing so, provide facts to support your
stand. Write you answer on a piece of paper.
