What Is A Design Process
The Design Process is an approach for breaking down a large project into manageable
chunks.
Architects, engineers, scientists, and other thinkers use the design process to solve a variety
of problems.

What Is A Design Brief
The Design Brief is the starting point of a project or manufacturing task. It usually contains
general information about what is needed, who the product is intended for and any obvious
constraints.
V-folding mechanisms are very popular and they are simple to make. Construct the pop-up
section by adding tabs to a rectangular piece of card. The tabs are glued to the backing card
remembering that the angle must be selected carefully.
Extension
Experiment with the more complex v-folds (acute-angle, pointed and layers).
Pop Up Book Project
Design Brief
A well-known book company have asked you to design and make a prototype pop-

The book is aimed at children, and must contain a creative, eye-catching and
interesting design to capture their imaginations. It must contain a range of card
mechanisms such as rotary, v-fold, internal stand, mouth and slide.

• The book needs to be aimed at children between 5-10 years of age, so think
about the images and style you want.
• Consider how much text will go into your book and the types of words you use.
• You need to write a short story to base your book on. You may like to create
your own or use a traditional fairy tale.
• You need to storyboard your pages—with images and design a front and back
cover.
Key words are the most important words. Read List 5 key words and explain what they mean. For
the design brief again and highlight what you think example: Attractive: This is something that looks

needs to include the spine.).
The book is aimed at children, and must be eye-catching and interesting to capture their imaginations.
It must contain a range of card mechanisms.
The colour scheme will be chosen carefully so that card appears bright and cheerful.
