Active and Inactive Faults

This document discusses the differences between active and inactive faults. It defines an active fault as one that has moved in the past and is expected to move again, generating earthquakes. An inactive fault is a structure that can be identified but does not cause earthquakes and has been inactive for millions of years. The document provides examples of active faults in Bicol region, such as the Masbate fault and Central Leyte fault, and inactive faults like the East Bohol fault and West Panay fault. It also describes ways to determine if a fault is active, such as by checking historical earthquake records, studying fault vibrations, and observing displacements in roads, streams, and mountains.

ACTIVE AND INACTIVE FAULTS

REVIEW

1. What is the difference between intensity and magnitude

of an earthquake?
PHIVOLCS EARTHQUAKE INTENSITY SCALE (PEIS)

1.The MAGNITUDE is a quantitative measure of its strength in

terms of the energy released.
The INTENSITY of an earthquake is measured in terms of
damage caused by it at a particular location
2.Magnitude of an earthquake is a measure of its size, while
intensity is an indicator of the severity of the damage at a
certain area or location caused by it.
3.Intensity decreases with epicenter. (the farther the epicenter
from the area, the less intense and less strong the earthquake
is)
OBJECTIVES

1. Differentiate active and active faults;

2. Name active and inactive faults in Bicol Region.
• FAULT

ACTIVE FAULT

INACTIVE FAULT
What can you say about the pictures?
• How will you differentiate active faults from inactive
faults?
• ACTIVITY PROPER
• Use the map to locate the nearest active
faults that may affect our town.
• Do the same when finding inactive and
active faults that are found in other place.
• Active Fault
1. Masbate Fault
2.Central Leyte Fault
3.Lake Bato Lineament
• Inactive Fault
4.East Bohol Fault
5.West Panay Fault
6.Cebu Lineament
ACTIVE FAULT

• is one that has moved in the past and is expected to

move again.
• has generated earthquakes before and is capable of
causing more in the future.
• sructures where there is a displacement
INACTIVE FAULT

• structures that can be identified but which do not cause

earthquakes.
• this fault is inactive for million of years

• *some faults only have large earthquakes once in

thousands of years, therefore there is a need to evaluate
their potential hazards.
ACTIVE and INACTIVE FAULTS
WAYS TO DETERMINE AN ACTIVE FAULTS

1. checking the country’s historical records.

- Historians always write about destructive events such
as earthquakes.

2. studying the vibrations, past and present, that come from

faults.
WAYS TO DETERMINE AN ACTIVE FAULTS
3. observing the surroundings.
- For example, a fault may cross a road and because of
that, the road is displaced.
- Or a fault may cut across a stream and the stream
channel is then shifted. Or a fault may slice through
mountains and form cliffs.

*This is not to say that anyone can spot an active fault.

Scientists need a lot of training to do that.
1.What will happen if the house is built near or on the fault?
