Before the covid-19 virus, the students were still able to practice the proper study method .and when The
world health organization declared the outbreak a public health emergency of international concern on 30
January 2020, and a pandemic on 11 March 202.Covid-19 disease (Novel coronavirus) is an infectious disease
caused by the SARS-COV-2 virus (WHO,2020). It affects our daily lives and, most especially, our mental health.
The COVID-19 pandemic has brought so much hardship in the sectors of industry, agriculture, livelihood, and
most especially education. It presents many challenges to students, educators, and parents. The biggest challenge
they are facing is coping with mental health conditions in children, who are the most vulnerable to the changes.
20% of college students say their mental health has significantly worsened under Covid-19. 48% of college
students have experienced a financial setback due to Covid-19. Among all students, 38% said having trouble
focusing on studies and/or work was the most stressful. 74% of students are challenged in maintaining a routine
due to COVID-19, and lastly, 8 in 10 students focus on school or work and avoid distraction (Active
Minds,2021). The importance of these study is to know the impact of COVID-19 on the mental health of students
at Tagbina National High School. The researcher believes studying this problem would be very relevant in
today’s world setting.
1.2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
This study aims to determine the impact of COVID-19 on the mental health of Grade 11 HUMSS students at
Tagbina National High School. Specially, this study aims to answer the following question:
1. What are the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on students' mental health in terms of:
A. Goodness
B. Badness
2. What aspect of the student's academic performance was impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic?
1.3 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
As the study focuses on the impact of COVID-19 on the mental health of Grade 11 HUMSS students at Tagbina
National High School, the researchers believe that, this study would be beneficial to the following.
For Students.
The results will provide the students the knowledge on how the COVID-19 could impact their mental health. It
will poke their attention to the warning that COVID-19 in mental health could have serious issues not minor issues.
For Parents/ Guardian.
This research would give the parents the knowledge about their children’s mental condition in regards of COVID-
19. They would be aware of what are the possible doings did their children done because of COVID-19 and how often
their children go through mental breakdown.
For Future Researchers.
This study would help the future researchers to formulate new conceptual study in relation to this topic.
1.4 SCOPE OF THE STUDY
This study focuses on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the mental health of grade 11 humss students at
Tagbina National High School. Therefore, the researchers studied the impact of COVID-19 on the mental health of
grade 11 HUMSS students at Tagbina National High School. To address the students’, need to be aware of this research,
3.1 RESEARCH DESIGN
The researchers chose a survey research design because it best served to answer the questions and the purposes of
the study. The survey research is one in which a group of people or items is studied by collecting and analyzing data
from only a few people or items considered to be representative of the entire group. In other words, only a part of the
population is studied, and findings from this are expected to be generalized to the entire population (Nworgu 1991:68).
Similary, McBurney (1994:170) defines the survey assessing public opinion or individual characteristics by the use of
questionnaire and sampling methods.
3.2 POPULATION OF THE STUDY
The target population for this research defined to include all Grade 11 HUMSS student aging in the middle of 12
and 20 years old, while the accessible population is five males and five females, since these are the noticeable audience
within the researcher’s reach. In this study, the accessible population comprised all the grade 11 HUMSS.
3.3 SAMPLING TECHNIQUES
A stratified random sampling procedure was used for selecting the participants in this study. This technique was
employed to ensure a fairly equal representation of the variables for the study. The stratification was based on the lists of
male and females in every section. Within each section, selection of participants was by simple random sampling. This
was achieved by writing out the names of the respondents in piece of paper which was folded and put in a basket. After
thorough reshuffling, the researcher selects an element, records it and puts it back in the basket until the required number
is obtained. That is, researcher applied sampling with replacement. Proportionate stratified random sampling technique
was employed to select 5 males and 5 females from all the sections of grade 11 HUMSS listed.
3.4 INSTRUMNET FOR DATA COLLECTION
The researcher designed a questionnaire as one of the data collections instruments for this study. The selected
participants were interviewed. The research questions were aimed to determine the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic to
the mental health of the Grade 11 HUMSS students in Tagbina national high school.
The questionnaire has four sections: A, B, C, and D:
•section “A”, is the title of the study;
•section “B” is a personal data of the respondents and the guide instruction;
•section “C” contains questions on the perceived problems of the study. It has 15 items;
•section “D” signature of the respondents.
The instrument was structured in the modified Likert scale, on a 4 – point scale, ranging from “always” (4), through
“sometimes” (3), “seldom” (2) to “never” (1). Subjects were then instructed to respond to their degree of agreement with
the statements contained in the instrument.
3.5 DIFINITION OF TERMS
PROPORTIONATE -stratified sample means that size of sample strata is proportional to the size of population
strata.
RESHUFFLING - reorganize or change the positions of ( government appointees ,members of a team etc.
