Electrochemical Synthesis

This document discusses the electrochemical synthesis of silver nanoparticles. The synthesis involves passing an electric current between an anode and cathode in an electrolyte solution containing silver nitrate. At the cathode, silver ions are reduced to silver nanoparticles. The nanoparticles were characterized using techniques like X-ray diffraction, diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. Some advantages of this electrochemical synthesis method are that it is low cost, produces high purity nanoparticles at low temperatures, and is environmentally friendly. However, mass production is difficult and the size, shape and structure are not fully controllable.

Electrods
Electrods are usually metal/strips wires connected by an
electrically conducting wire.
Anode
The electrode where reduction takes place.
Cathode
The electrode where reduction takes place.
PRINCIPLE

1.An electrochemical synthesis can be basically interpreted by passing

an electric current between two or more electrods which is called the
anode and cathode located in electrode.
2.In this technique, the anode can be oxidized to metal ion species in the
electrode and the metal ion isolater on reduced to metal by the cathode
with the assistance of stabilizers.
Design of synthesis
Successful electrochemical reaction we need to make suitable
choice of a reaction parameters:

 Possibility to choose inert or reactive choice of electrode and its

composition.
 Suitable pH, temperature, electrode concentration.
 Possibility of cells to be divided or undivided.
Mechanism

1.Electric current is actually passing an electrolyte containing metal salt the metal

sedimented within the cathode. Current extensively utilized by plating

technologists to fabricate metal.

2.However, based on the applied potential ,type of the anion and the chosen ph

of the solution, different happen to the cathode.

Silver Nanoparticles

1.Electrochemical synthesis of silver nanoparticles Electrochemical deposition is a

technique that has been widely used for the synthesis of metal nanoparticles.
2.Electrochemical deposition occurs at the interface of an electrolyte solution
containing the metal to be deposited and an electrically conductive metal substrate.

3.Silver nanoparticles were synthesized electrochemically using an electrolyte

containing 0.01 mM concentration of AgNO3..
4.The electrolyte was prepared from double deionised water and the volume of the

cell was 100 ml.

5.The glassy carbon electrode and the silver metal were employed as working

electrode and counter electrodes, respectively.

6. Ag NPs showed dendritic growth and it was found that high concentration of the

silver ion favours the aggregation and dendritic formation.

7.The overall cathodic reduction of silver ions at room temperature can occur in the

following way.
Characterization
1.The formation of Ag NPs was confirmed by X-ray diffraction
technique using diffractometer.
2.Particle size and anisotropic nature of the Ag-NPs were calculated
using Scherrer formula and Williamson–Hall equation.
3.Diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS) was used to characterise the
optical propertiesof the Ag NPs.
4. Scanning Electron Microscopy was used to determine the size and
morphology of the AgNPs obtained from electrode position method.
Advantages

• Easily fabricated with advantages of low cost

• Low temperature

• High purity
• Eco-friendly because it avoids the use of reducer agents that usually
are toxic
Disadvantages

• Mass production is not possible

• Can’t predict the structure

• Can’t predict size and shape.
