CONTROL SYSTEM
PROPOSAL PRESENTATION
ABSTRCT
The main purpose of the project is to create a system which uses GSM to
control the home appliances.
The device able to control the ON/OFF switch electrical device.
GSM modem is the medium by which the user can interact with the
module.
PIC microcontroller performs as heart of whole controlling system.
The main function of PIC microcontroller is to initiate the attached GSM
module and make it ready to communicate with the home appliances by
using mobile phone.
The software was written using Micro C Compilers.
Generally, this system is reliable and highly accurate.
CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION
GSM has been one of the popular and reliable wireless communication
systems which is accessible and user friendly.
Network services are extended beyond speech communication to many
other custom specified applications.
The project was based on the principle of GSM network, which enables
the user to remotely control the operations of the appliances by using a
mobile phone.
The user sends GSM data in the form of SMS message to switch
ON/OFF any appliance at home.
The system can be improved to provide the user with information
about the status of each appliance.
BACKGROUND
With the development of technology, Electronic technology is being
ameliorated rapidly.
Some of electrical appliances are operated daily and those appliances
consume considerable electrical power.
Unusual, inappropriate or over usage of those electrical devices mainly
influences on power wasting and user has to pay a lot.
Maintain electrical devices can save a lot of energy and reduce the power.
If user is not at home, it’s unable to control the electrical devices. If those
operation can be done by in remote away.
Combining wireless technology with Home Automation technology may
increase the electrical system maintaining efficiency, security and safety
standards.
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM
A few decades ago, controlling devices using remote
control switches like infrared (IR) and Radio Frequency
(RF) were already popular but these technologies have
their own limitations and bandwidth.
Some technologies like IR remote control are only used
for short distance applications.
In case of users going oversea or outstation, the remote
control technology using IR and RF is not suitable due to
range limitation.
In other word, user is unable to control the appliances if
user not at home.
OBJECTIVE
General Objectives:- Specific objectives:-
To design and develop Home To allow the communication between
Appliances Control System the microcontroller and mobile phone
over GSM network by using a by sending message from the remote
phone to control devices.
mobile phone.
Program the PIC16F877A.
To save the inappropriate
power dissipation. To understand the architecture and
programming of the PIC.
Storing basic information of devices
to be controlled.
To provide fast and secured
transmission of text (SMS).
SCOPE & LIMITATIONS
Scope:-
Mobile phone with SIM card enables the user to remotely control the operations of the
appliances by communication to the GSM modem.
GSM modem allows the capability to send and receive SMS to and from the mobile
phone.
RS-232 is the basic serial communication cable that will be used to interface between
GSM modem and PIC microcontroller.
PIC microcontroller will be interfaced to the control circuit that is connected to the
appliances.
Limitations:-
The only person who can communicate with the control module is the person who
will be successfully authenticated.
Operation of the controlling unit is only possible through a cell phone with SMS
messaging capabilities.
The controlling unit must be able to receive and decode SMS messages.
SIGNIFICANCE
Low cost
Not component intensive
Efficient and uncomplicated wiring
Implemented in any home and office automation
system

LITERATURE REVIEW
Introduction:
Home appliance control system project is based on GSM
technology and used for transmission of SMS to the receiver
as the operating command.
SMS sending and receiving is used for have access to
electrical appliance and allowing disconnect control at home.
It is proposed appliance sub-system enables the user to
control home appliances remotely.
Sending and receiving SMS to and from the system is done
by a GSM modem.
RF based Electrical appliance
control system:
Are used as the signal transmitting medium it can control up to four
electrical appliances.
Critiques and evaluation of RF based control system:
Problem identified Complex design
Law accuracy No feedback signal available
Java based home appliance control
system:
Project monitor and control home appliance via web page (http protocol).
The entire project consist of embedded circuit and computer based server.
Critiques and evaluation of java based home appliance control system:
Problem identified Another PC or smart phone is required
High cost needed Internet facility is needed for their operation
PC based remote controller using a mobile phone:
This is through accessing the serial and parallel PC ports as serial port for
transferring data from mobile phone to PC and parallel port for interfacing PC
with electrical apparatus. The system is operated by SMS.
Critiques and evaluation PC based remote controller using Mobile phone
Problem identified More equipment needed
No feedback signal to the operator High cost
Proposed of GSM based home
appliance control system
It does not require the use of a personal computer (PC).
Our system does not rely on the Internet.
GSM Technology to Remotely the system allows the user to effectively monitor
and controlling the appliances.
The system is capable enough to instruct user via SMS from a specific cell
number to change the condition of the home appliance according to the user’s
needs and requirements.
Effectiveness of Cell Phone Based
Device Control System
In our project, we developed a cell phone based remote system to
control home appliances remotely.
The system provides availability due to development of a low cost
system.
Some of the merits of GSM based appliance control system
It increase flexibility and efficiency
Cost effective
control from anywhere in world if cellular coverage is available
minimize time and power wastage
To eliminate the need of being physically present in any location
for tasks involving the operation of appliance within the
household/office.
CHAPTER 3
METHODOLOGY
System development methodology
All the information related to components, GSM and PIC was
searched and the most suitable would be selected to be used in this
project.
The C programming is studied, developed, simulated and executed.
The software design includes interfacing between mobile phone,
GSM modem, control circuit, PIC and home appliances.
The next step is hardware design, assembly of components will be
carried out in stages, and devices will be connected to one another
to form the complete system.
