14 Network Hardwares

The document discusses different types of networking hardware. It describes connectors, networking cables, clients, servers, bridges, modems, routers, hubs, and repeaters. For each it provides a definition, function, some international brands, and advantages and disadvantages. Key points covered include how connectors join electrical conductors, how networking cables connect devices on a network, how clients rely on servers for storage and services, and how various hardware components distribute and extend network connectivity and communications.

1. Connector
An electrical connector is an electromechanical device used to join electrical
conductors and create an electrical circuit.

Function - used to join subsections of circuits together and to terminate

segments of copling.

International brands
1. Panduit
2. Tyco electronics
3. Dymo corporation
4. Molex
5. Delphi
Advantages :
1. Improves production process
2. Easy to upgrade
3. Easy to maintain
Disadvantages :
1. Lacks flexibility
2. Difficult to access
3. Hard to modify
2. Networking cables
Networking cables are networking hardware used to connect one network device
to other network devices or to connect two or more computers to share printers,
scanners, etc. Different types of network cables, are used depending on the
network’s physical layer, topology and size.

Function - connect one network device to other network devices

International Brands : Dbillionda, Jadaol, Mediabridge

Advantages :
1. Reliability and Stability
2. Visibility
3. Speed
Disadvantages :
1. Lack of Mobility
2. Installation
3. Maintenance
3. Client
A client is a piece of computer hardware or software/system that uses
remote services from a server. Some clients have limited disk storage
capacity, or perhaps none at all, and they have to rely on remote file
systems from a server to function.

Function – to retrieve and send files to/from the server

Advantages :
1. Files are stored in a central location
2. Backups and network security is controlled centrally
3. Network peripherals are controlled centrally
Disadvantages :
1. Too pricey
2. Hard to modify
3. If part of a network fails, everything else crashes
4. server
A server is a piece of computer hardware or software that provides
functionality for other programs or devices called clients.

Function - provides a service to another computer program and its user

International Brands : Dell, Lenovo, HPE

Advantages :
1. Improves collaborations
2. Give scalability
3. Adds seamless connectivity
Disadvantages :
1. If a network crashes, everything crashes
2. Very costly
3. Transition
5. Bridge
A network bridge is a computer networking device that creates a single,
aggregate network from multiple communication networks or network
segments.

Function - connects two segments of a network together.

International Brands : Landis

Advantages :
1. Increased Bandwidth
2. High reliability
3. Network extend
Disadvantages :
1. Cost
2. Speed
3. Network Performance
6. Modem
A modem (modulator-demodulator) is a hardware component that
allows a computer or another device, such as a router or switch, to
connect to the Internet.

Function - converts digital data from a computer or other device into an

analog signal that can be sent over standard telephone lines

International Brands : Netgear, Motorola, D-Link

Advantages :
1. Useful in connecting LAN to the internet
2. Converts digital signal into an analog system
3. Speed is dependent
Disadvantages :
1. The modem does not know about the own destination path
2. Acts just as an interface between LAN and internet
3. A modem is not understood the intermediate process
7. Router
A router is a networking device that forwards data packets between
computer networks. Routers perform the traffic directing functions on
the Internet.

Function – receives and sends data from/to computer networks

International Brands : Asus, D-link, TP-link, Linksys

Advantages :
1. Reduce network traffic
2. Configurable
3. Can connect different network architecture
Disadvantages :
1. A router is more expensive than bridge or repeaters
2. Router only work with rotatable network protocol
3. The router is slower than bridge or repeaters
8. Hub
A hub is a network hardware device for connecting multiple Ethernet
devices together and making them act as a single network segment.

Function – connects segments of ethernet devices

International Brands : DT Swiss, Shimano, SRAM

Advantages :
1. Easy to install
2. Can different media type
3. Cheaper
Disadvantages :
1. Can not reduce network traffic
2. It can not connect different type of network architecture such as a
token ring and Ethernet extra
3. Can not filter information
9. Repeater
a repeater is an electronic device that receives a signal and retransmits
it. Repeaters are used to extend transmissions so that the signal can
cover longer distances or be received on the other side of an
obstruction.

Function – extends transmissions making signal cover wider range

International Brands : D-Link, Linksys, TP-Link

Advantages :
1. A repeater is simple to connect.
2. Repeaters can extend a network's total distance.
3. It has the ability to boost or strengthen the digital to retransmit.
Disadvantages :
1. Limitation in the number of repeaters.
2. Repeater are unable to reduce network traffic
3. It does not segment the network.
