Commutator
Commutator consists of copper segments, mica
insulation, and iron assembly parts. Mica insulation is to
be used between segment and the steel parts. The ‘V’
grooved copper segment is held by iron jaws on either
side. The internal diameter of the commutator will be
assembled to the rotor, ensuring axial and radial locking.
The armature winding ends, terminating on the slit
provided in the commutator segments, are brazed or TIG
welded.

Fan: The fan mounted on the rotor is for cooling purpose.
End Shields: A motor typically has two end shields a drive end and a non drive
end they house the bearings for the armature or rotor to rotate. The driving end
(DE) shield and the non driving end (NDE) shield are assembled to the housing by
placing them on to the spigots in the housing and by fixing bolts. The inner casing
of the bearing rests on the shaft, while the outer casing is resting on the inner
diameter of the end shield. The bearings are mounted press-fit on the shaft. They
are housed inside the end shield in such a manner that it is not necessary to
remove the bearings from the shaft for dismantling.
Brush and brush Holder Assembly:The brush and brush- holder assembly unit
is mounted on the end shield at a convenient position so that the supply from the
armature can be had from the brushes sitting on the commutator. There are
different types of brush sets and brush holder assemblies, each distinct from each
other depending on design and space requirement in the machine. The important
point is that the brush should rest on commutator surface with sufficient pressure
to collect or feed the armature current. Care is taken to lift the brushes as and
when required, say, for cleaning of commutator surface or to replace the brush.
