DC Machine, Problem-2

Draw the sectional end view and longitudinal

view of ‘pole with core’ of a dc machine,
for the following data-
Pole arc = 210mm,
Pole radius = 200 mm,
Pole height including pole shoe = 145mm,
Yoke thickness = 55 mm,
Pole Length = 170mm,
End plate thickness = 3 mm,
DC Machine, Problem-2,contd.,

Show the method of

fixing the ‘pole-brick’ to the yoke
Using the following fasteners-
M12 Bolts: 2 Nos.,
Rivets: 12mm dia, 4 Nos.,
Central steel rod: 50mm x 35 mm
Problem-2, solution
Problem3:The isometric view of a Pole of a DC Machine is
shown in the figure. The isometric view of the Bobbin with
field winding is also shown. Assemble the units and show
half sectional elevation of the assembly and the plan.

Full sectional plan

Draw the end sectional view and longitudinal full sectional
elevation of the following as per the dimensions given below-
DC 6 pole, 150h.p motor
Armature diameter=55cm
Air-gap length(radial) 0.5 at main poles, 0.6 at inter poles
Main poles laminated breadth 14, arc 20, height with shoe 21
Height without shoe 18
Inter pole breadth=4
Outside diameter of yoke 115,
Length of main pole 20cm
Length of inter pole=25cm, rivet1 diameter
Length of yoke 25
The method of fixing the pole lamination and the pole to the
yoke should be clearly shown
Assume any additional data necessary
Armature diameter=55cm
Diameter of pole arc=55+(0.5×2)=56
Radius of pole arc=56/2=28
20
Pole arc length=20
Interpole radius=(55+(0.6×2))/2=28.3
Arc length=2r(/360)
Calculate angle of arc  r
Angle of arc =42.44; /2=21.22
Inner radius of yoke=28+21=49
Outer radius of yoke=115/2=57.5
l
Problem.4.Draw the sectional end view of a casing
of a 4Pole DC machine with the following data
Diameter of pole arc=425mm
Inside dia of yoke=745mm
Outside dia of yoke=845mm
Polo width=150mm
Diameter of rivet holes=4x10mm, Cross section of steel
rod=48mmx28mm
Polearc/Pole pitch=0.667
Dimension of Inter Pole=40mmx150mm
Axle Height=450mm
Solution
Pole angle=.667x90=60 degrees
Pole height=745-425/2=160mm
Pole shoe height dimension is not given, assume suitable
value (you may take 20mm)
Interpole to be at the middle of main pole, width 40mm
and height 150mm
Axle height is the distance between center of machine to
the foot
Armature

The armature core is made up of circular laminations with

slots. The laminations are punched out from Non-Grain
Oriented electrical sheets of 0.5 mm thickness. The
armature stampings are placed on the rotor directly,
guided by the keys and key ways on the shaft as well as
inside diameter of the stamping. This ensures radial
locking. They are locked suitably to the shaft, to prevent
axial movement.

Assembly of armature core on Hub
For machines greater than 4 poles, or special machines of 4
poles of medium ratings, the armature core packets are rested
on ‘hub’, which in turn rests on shaft. The fact that the
designed core behind rotor slot is not very deep is the main
reason to resort to the hub arrangement.Core packets

Shaft
Commutator
Commutator consists of copper segments, mica
insulation, and iron assembly parts. Mica insulation is to
be used between segment and the steel parts. The ‘V’
grooved copper segment is held by iron jaws on either
side. The internal diameter of the commutator will be
assembled to the rotor, ensuring axial and radial locking.
The armature winding ends, terminating on the slit
provided in the commutator segments, are brazed or TIG
welded.

 Fan: The fan mounted on the rotor is for cooling purpose.

 End Shields: A motor typically has two end shields a drive end and a non drive
end they house the bearings for the armature or rotor to rotate. The driving end
(DE) shield and the non driving end (NDE) shield are assembled to the housing by
placing them on to the spigots in the housing and by fixing bolts. The inner casing
of the bearing rests on the shaft, while the outer casing is resting on the inner
diameter of the end shield. The bearings are mounted press-fit on the shaft. They
are housed inside the end shield in such a manner that it is not necessary to
remove the bearings from the shaft for dismantling.
 Brush and brush Holder Assembly:The brush and brush- holder assembly unit
is mounted on the end shield at a convenient position so that the supply from the
armature can be had from the brushes sitting on the commutator. There are
different types of brush sets and brush holder assemblies, each distinct from each
other depending on design and space requirement in the machine. The important
point is that the brush should rest on commutator surface with sufficient pressure
to collect or feed the armature current. Care is taken to lift the brushes as and
when required, say, for cleaning of commutator surface or to replace the brush.
Draw the End View of the DC Generator with the following data-

  Outer Radius of the Yoke = 195mm
  Pole Width = 65mm
  Pole height = 56mm
  Pole Arc/Pole Pitch = 2/3
  Steel rod in the main pole= 40mm40mm
 Inter Pole Dimension = 20×52
  Armature Slot Dimension = 8×22
 No. of Armature Slots = 32
 Vent holes in the Armature = 6 No.s of 10mm dia.
 Axle height = 200mm
