MIS in Dell: An Overview of Creation and Operation

About Dell
• Dell was founded in 1984 by Michael Dell
• Headquartered in Round Rock, Texas
• Dell turns over inventory every three days on
average.

• Dell became the first company to record $1
million in daily online sales in 1997.
• The company's Web site, which runs entirely on
Dell PowerEdge servers, receives more than one
billion page requests per quarter at 86 country
sites in 28 languages/dialects and 29 currencies.
• Dell shares information with its suppliers on a
range of topics, including product quality and
inventory.

Dell’s MIS structure
• There are more than 20 main servers of Dell all around
the world
• In India Dell has servers in Mumbai, Banglore, Chennai
and many more places
• Most of Dell’s customer care centers are in India and
Philippines and thus dell has a good number of servers in
these countries
• Dell uses the satellite to transmit its signal and use its
MIS
• The mother server of Dell is in Texas near its headquaters
• Proxy locations that do not begin with a protocol
(such as http: // or ftp: // ) are assumed to be a
CERN-type HTTP proxy.
• For example, when the user types proxy , it's treated
the same as if the user typed http://proxy . For FTP
gateways, such as the TIS FTP gateway, the proxy
should be listed with the ftp:// in front of the proxy
name. For example, an FTP gateway for an FTP proxy
would have this format:
ftp://ftpproxy

• Dell determined that it needs to reduce costs to
handle data
• Dell’s infrastructure and processes were
supported by internally developed applications
to define and manage Bills of Material (BOMs),
and manage related documents
• As the enterprise continued to grow, it was
becoming harder to monitor and control
product development and production startup
Objectives of the Re-engineering
• The initiative of Re-engineering was taken in 2000
• Adopting standard software and processes for the
workflow from design through manufacturing
• Inclusion of suppliers and manufacturing sites
• Discover opportunities to reduce material costs
• Create user friendly software for online
transactions and information flow to consumers
• Reduce lead time both with suppliers and
consumers
Approach
• Replaced its internally developed software with
commercial, web-based software
• Created a software to manage special configurations
of consumer
• Connected the web based software with its suppliers
and consumers
• The software was named ‘Agile’.

• During the first phase 2500 internal users and 37 top
suppliers connected to the MIS
• During the second phase Dell added 800 users and
63 suppliers to the system and also improved the
interface to be more user friendly
• Included a Data Validation Tool to the system which
checks the data that flows for validity
Results
• Improved timeliness and accuracy of data
• Dell changed the inventory system to reduce
approximately 30% of its inventory cost
• The average time to attend to an order reduced by
50%
• Configuration management department required
30% less people to work for it
• Reduced unnecessary scrap and rework
• The data validation tool traps about 8500 errors on
an average every month
