Geography Work

The document defines disasters as serious disruptions that exceed a community's ability to cope using its own resources, and can be caused by natural hazards like tornadoes, hurricanes, floods, wildfires, earthquakes, and drought. It also discusses how different disasters can be avoided through measures like flood control infrastructure, earthquake-resistant building techniques, and wildfire prevention practices. Additionally, it notes that the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami caused immense destruction along coastal areas due to an undersea earthquake near Sumatra.

what do you
think are
Disasters
Define Disasters

→ Disasters are serious
disruptions to the
functioning of a
community that exceed its
capacity to cope using its
own resources. Disasters
can be caused by natural,
man-made and technological
hazards, as well as various
factors that influence the
exposure and vulnerability
of a community.
Types Of Disasters
These types of disasters include:

Tornadoes and Severe Storms.

Hurricanes and Tropical Storms.

Floods.

Wildfires.

Earthquakes.

Drought.
Tornadoes and Severe
Storms.

→ Tornadoes are outgrowths of
powerful thunderstorms
that appear as rotating,
funnel-shaped clouds. They
extend from a thunderstorm
to the ground with violent
winds that average 30 miles
per hour. Also, they can vary
in speed dramatically from
being stationary to 70 miles
per hour

Hurricanes and Tropical Storms.
→ Hurricanes, cyclones and typhoons
are all types of tropical storms. ...

→ A hurricane is a tropical storm with

winds that have reached a constant
speed of 74 miles per hour or more.
The eye of a storm is usually 20-30
miles wide and may extend over 400
miles. The dangers of a storm include
torrential rains, high winds and storm

surges.
Floods.

→ A flood is an overflow of
water that submerges land
that is usually dry. In the
sense of "flowing water", the
word may also be applied to
the inflow of the tide. Floods
are an area of study of the
discipline hydrology and are
of significant concern in
agriculture, civil engineering
and public health.

Wildfires.

→ A wildfire, forest fire,

bushfire, wildland fire or
rural fire is an unplanned,
unwanted, uncontrolled
fire in an area of
combustible vegetation
starting in rural areas and
urban areas.

Earthquakes.

→ An earthquake is the
shaking of the surface of
the Earth resulting from a
sudden release of energy
in the Earth's lithosphere
that creates seismic
waves.

Drought.

→ A drought is an event of
prolonged shortages in
the water supply, whether
atmospheric, surface
water or ground water. A
drought can last for
months or years, or may
be declared after as few
as 15 day

5 Causes Of Natural Disasters

→ Natural disasters are caused

due to different reasons
like soil erosion, seismic
activity, tectonic
movements, air pressure,
and ocean currents etc.
Natural activities taking
place in the earth's crust, as
well as surface, are the main
reasons for these disasters.

How Can Different
Disasters Be Avoided

Floods

→ Flood control
infrastructure, such as
levees, seawalls, and tide
gates, work as physical
barriers to prevent areas
from flooding. Other
measures, such as pump
stations and channels,
help reduce flooding.

Earthquakes

→ We cannot prevent natural

earthquakes from occurring
but we can significantly
mitigate their effects
by identifying hazards,
building safer structures,
and providing education on
earthquake safety. By
preparing for natural
earthquakes we can also
reduce the risk from human
induced earthquakes.

Wildfires

→ Avoid burning wastes

around dry grass. Don't
start a fire on a windy
day. Use a can or fire pit.
Never burn household
wastes when any
regulations of wildfire
prevention policy
prohibit it.

Reasons why the Indian Ocean
tsunami is an Important Topic

→ The tsunami and its aftermath

were responsible for immense
destruction and loss on the rim
of the Indian Ocean. On
December 26, 2004, at 7:59 am
local time, an undersea
earthquake with a magnitude of
9.1 struck off the coast of the
Indonesian island of Sumatra.
