Reverse Engineering-Project Proposal

The document summarizes the process of reverse engineering a bicycle air pump. It describes the basic parts and functions of a stand type bicycle air pump. The plan is to dismantle an air pump, study how the parts assemble, measure the components, analyze materials used, and draw diagrams. The goal is to understand how it works and address issues like rising cylinder temperatures reducing efficiency over time. Areas for improvement include adding cooling and making it more efficient.

REVERSE

ENGINEERING
OF BICYCLE
AIR PUMP
BICYCLE AIR PUMP
 Bicycle air pump is a simple mechanical device which is used to inflate bicycle
tires.
 Was invented around 1887, after the first pneumatic or inflatable tire was
produced.
 It is a very common thing in nowadays home.
 Basic types of bicycle air pumps
I. Hand pump
II. Stand pump
III. Foot pump

 We will do our project on stand type bicycle air pump

HOW A BICYCLE AIR PUMP WORK??
• A very simple mechanism is used in a bicycle air pump
• Mainly 2 strokes pull stroke and push/compression stroke
• In the pull stroke when the handle is pull up piston in the cylinder rise up and through the inlet valve
located in piston air come into the cylinder
• In the compression stroke air, which come into the cylinder is compressed by pushing down the
piston. when it happens inlet valve closes, and outlet valve opens.
• Compressed air in the cylinder is taken out by the hose and by the nozzle located at the end of the
horse further pressurized and pump out air.

TOOLS WE NEED...
• Wrenches
• Pin punch
• Wd 40 lubricant
• Screw drivers
• Ball peen hammer
• Plier
• Vernier caliper
• Straight edge
• Measuring tape
OUR PLAN TO REVERSE ENGINEER
 Dismantling the pump into its components
 Study about how the components have get assembled
 Drawing rough sketches of each components
 Taking the measurements of each component
 Study further about materials that can be used to manufacture each component
 Draw 3D/2D drawings of components which we will be further studied.
 Analyze the practical issues and coming up with ideas to improve the pump
PRACTICAL ISSUES
• Rising the temperature of the cylinder while it is in use. This reduce the effective lifespan of the rubber seal.
Due to this, function of the air pump becomes inefficient with time.
• Inflammation and destruction of the rubber hose

AREA WE ARE WILLING TO IMPROVE

• Adding a cooling mechanism to reduce the temperature rising issue
• Make the pump more efficient by changing the shape or pumping method.
• Study about alternative materials that can be used
