Addition of Polynomials

This document provides instructions on how to add polynomials. It begins by stating the objectives of learning how to add polynomials and solve problems involving addition of polynomials. It then provides an example problem worked out step-by-step with 3 sample problems for students to practice on. The next section defines like and unlike terms in polynomials and provides examples. The final sections provide rules for adding polynomials along with examples of adding different types of polynomials including monomials, binomials, trinomials, and multinomials. The document concludes by providing practice problems for students to work on adding polynomials.

ADDITION

OF POLYNOMIALS
Objectives
In this lesson, the students must be able to:
1) add polynomials, and;
2) solve problems involving addition of
polynomials.

BOAT)

Same signs, add and keep;

Different signs, subtract.
Take the sign of the larger number.
Then, it will be exact.

ABSTRACTION
In a POLYNOMIAL, terms
that are exactly alike
except for their numerical
coefficients are called
LIKE or SIMILAR TERMS.
Examples:

{ 4a, – 3a, + 2a }

{ 7b, 3b, - 25b, b, -6b }

{ -5x2 , - 20x2 , + 10x2 , - 3x2 , 50x2 }

While terms
that are different from
each other are called
UNLIKE TERMS or DISSIMILAR
TERMS.
Examples:

{ 4c, – 3a, + 2e, 8x, - 12y }

{ 7b, 3d, - 9, 5f }

{ -15x , - 2x , + 33x , - 13x , 11x }

Rules for Adding Polynomials

* To add polynomials, simply combine similar

terms.
* To combine similar terms, get the sum of the
numerical coefficients and annex the same
literal coefficients.
* If there is more than one term, for convenience,
