Integration in Vector Fields: Book Reference: Thomas Calculus 11 Edition

This document summarizes key concepts from Chapter 16 of Thomas Calculus on integration in vector fields. It covers line integrals and their applications, including evaluating work done by conservative vector fields along paths, determining whether a field is conservative, and using potential functions. It also discusses calculating the circulation of a field around a circle and evaluating flux across curves using Green's theorem. Practice exercises are provided on evaluating work, circulation, and flux for different vector fields.

CHAPTER 16
INTEGRATION IN VECTOR FIELDS
16.1-16.4 : LINE INTEGRALS AND APPLICATIONS (UNIT 1)

Introduction: Application3- Conser vative

Fields

If the field F is conservative

The line integral can then be evaluated

without involving complicated parametrization (method1)

or

even with no parametrization (method 2)

NOTE:
Conser vative Field

If the field F is conservative on an open region D

iff
is path independent

i.e. is the same over all paths from A to B

(A & B are any two points in the region D)

Method to decide on a field if conservative:

Given the vector field F = M i + N j + P k ,

with continuous first partial derivatives
then

F is conservative iff Py = Nz My = Nx M z = Px

ex1: F = yz i + xz j + xy k is conservative
ex2: F = (2x-3) i –z j + (cos z) k is not conservative

Another Version for testing conservative:

F = Mi + Nj + Pk is conservative iff M dx + N dy + P dz is an exact differential

Definition: Potential Function

Given F a field defined on D and f a function such
that , then f is called a potential function of F on D.
ex:
f = xyz is a potential function of F = yz i + xz j + xy
k

If the field F is conservative then
