Group 7-Fundamentals of Idle Air Control

The idle air control valve (IAC) regulates the engine's idle speed by opening and closing to release air into the engine. It is located near the throttle body and connected to the engine control unit. A failing IAC can cause irregular idle speed, a illuminated check engine light, and rough or stalling engine idle. To clean a dirty IAC, disconnect air ducts, spray cleaner into the throttle body while revving the engine, then reattach ducts once cleaning is complete. Testing resistance of the IAC coil driver circuits can also help diagnose issues.

FUNDAMENTALS OF

IDLE AIR CONTROL

Ronald Mislang Jr.
Marc Allan Domingo
IDLE AIR CONTROL VALVE
 Its main function of the idle air control valve (IAC) is responsible for
managing the engine’s idle speed. There aren’t many car parts that are as
accurately named as the idle air control valve. It is a valve or a device that
opens and closes to release air or fluid flow (air in this case) into the engine.
MAJOR MANAGEMENT COMPONENTS
OF THE ENGINE
 Decreasing or Increasing the (RPM) of the engine, depending on
what the current operating conditions call for.
 The idle air control valve is usually connected to the throttle body
next to the intake manifold. It is the engine control unit( ECU) that
manages all the functions of the valve.
COMMON SYMPTOMS OF A BAD OR
FAILING IDLE AIR CONTROL VALVE (IAC)
 When the idle air control (IAC) fails it can cause all sorts of issues
and in some cases, may even render it undrivable. A bad or failing
idle air control valve (IAX) will produce a few symptoms that can
alert the driver of a potential issue
1.) Irregular Idle Speed - One of the most common symptoms associated with a
problematic idle air control valve is irregular idle speed is programmed to regulate and
maintain idle speed at a constant rate. If it fails It can cause the Idle speed to be thrown off.
2.) Check Engine Light Illuminated - Another symptoms of a potential issue with the idle
air control valve (IAC) If the engine control module detects an issue with the idle air
control valve circuit or signal it will set of the Check engine Light to notify the driver that
there’s an issue.
3.)Rough Engine Idle – A normal healthy idle air control valve (IAC) will provide smooth
idling in your vehicle. But if the valve goes bad for any reason, the idling will go from
smooth to rough.
4.)Engine Stalling – If the Idle air control valve fails completely it may leave the vehicle
without a source of air to maintain a proper idle. This may result in the engine stalling
while operating.
5.)Stalling Under Load – Increasing the load on the Engine will cause it to stall.
Sometimes the engine stalling will happen on its own.
HOW TO CLEAN THE IDLE
AIR CONTROL VALVE?
 Disconnect the air intake ductwork from the throttle body.
 Start the Engine, then increase and hold the idle speed to 1000 to 1500 rpm.
 Spray the throttle cleaner or engine cleaner into the throat of the throttle body aiming for the idle air
bypass port.
 Turn the engine off to allow the cleaner to soak into the passageway.
 Wait about 3 minutes.
 Restart the engine, rev and hold at 1000 to 1500 rpm and repeat the cleaning process again.
 Turn the engine off again, and reattach the air intake duck to the throttle body.
 Start the engine and rev and hold to 1500 to 2000 rpm until no white smoke is coming out of the
exhaust pipe.
 If the idle speed still surges after this, the valve is defective and need to be replaced.
HOW TO TEST THE COIL DRIVER
CIRCUITS IN THE (IAX) VALVE?
 Using an ohmmeter, Measure the resistance between pins 3 and 2 on the (IAC)
valve. Resistance should be 10-14 ohms. If the Resistance is ok. Proceed to the
next step. Finally, If resistance is out of range, Replace the (IAX) and retest.
Causes of Idle Air Control Motor Failure:
 Build-up of carbon rust or debris
 Partial or complete jamming Actuator.
Symptoms of a falling Idle Air control Motor may include:
 Engine surging or stalling
 Poor idle conditions
 Check engine lights on
