Clasification of Computers

The document discusses different categories of computer systems used by large organizations: microcomputers, midrange computers, mainframes, and supercomputers. It provides details on each category, including examples and characteristics. Microcomputers are the smallest and most commonly used personal computers and workstations. Midrange computers are more powerful than microcomputers but less expensive than mainframes. Mainframes are large, conventional computers used by large banks, airlines, and other large organizations. Supercomputers are the most powerful computers designed for massive computations.

COMPUTER SYSTEMS

– The most powerful computers, used by

large organizations and department within
organizations are microcomputers,
midrange computers, mainframes and the
super computers.
CATEGORIES OF COMPUTER SYSTEM

 MICRO COMPUTER
 MIDRANGE COMPUTER SYSTEM
 MAINFRAME COMPUTERS
 SUPER COMPUTERS
Cont…
1. Micro computer: It is the smallest category of computer.
They are used not only for household management and
personal entertainment, but also for most of the automated
task required by small businesses .Ex- IBM System123,HCL
Work Horse
ADVANTAGE : Small and portable , relatively inexpensive,
works as soon as they are switched on, excellent graphic
capabilities, do not occupy much space, do not consume
much power.
DISADVANTAGES: Limited memory storage capacity ,
relatively slow power(as compared to mini computers).
Types of Micro computers

1. Personal Computer : PCs are easier to use and

affordable than work stations. PCs are developed
generally as desktop or portable machines.
2. Work stations-Technical work stations that
support applications with heavy mathematical
computing and graphics display demand such as
computer aided design in engineering or
investment portfolio analysis in the securities
industry. Super micros are the powerful work
stations e.g.- Sun , Apple , HP, NeXT.
Mid Range Computer System
 These computer were first known as minicomputers for
scientific research , instrumentation systems, engineering
analysis, and industrial process monitoring and control.
The more powerful minicomputers are called Superminis.
They are not so powerful as mainframes, but less costly to
buy, operate and maintain and thus meet the computing
needs of organizations.CPU Speed is 100Kips to 500 Mips
. Ex. Honeywell , Datapoint.etc
Characteristic of Minicomputers

 Smaller CPU than a mainframe.

 Word length are usually 16-32 bits.
 Supports between 15 to 25 Terminals.
Mainframe computers
 These are large computers built to a conventional
architecture. These can process several million
instruction per record. Large organizations use
these machines to handle wide array of data such
as banks, insurance companies ,airlines, railway
reservation, space research organization .
Mainframe term was originally referred to the
cabinet in a large computer system.Ex. IBM 4300
Series , Honeywell 60 series.
Super Computer
 The speed and power of super computers, the fastest
class of computers, are almost beyond human
comprehension, and their capabilities are
continuously being improved. The term super
computer describes a category of extremely
powerful computer systems specially designed for
scientific, engineering and business applications
requiring high speeds for massive numeric
computations. Ex.param8000,param10000 etc . It’s
cost is from 5 million to 50 million dollar.
