Identifying Objects
Attracted by Magnets
Lesson Objectives:
1. Identify objects attracted by magnets.
2. State the importance of magnets.
3. Participate actively in group activity.
Show a magnet to the
class. Ask questions
about it.
Telling a story about how

magnets originated.
The first magnet was not invented, but
rather found from a naturally occurring
mineral called magnetite. Traditionally, the
ancient GREEKS were the discoverers of
magnetite. There is a story about a
shepherd named Magnes whose shoe nails
stuck to a rock containing magnetite.
He took a step and suddenly found that
the nails that held his shoe together and
the metal tip of his staff were suck fast to
the rock he was standing on. Intrigued,
he began digging and discovered the first
recorded lodstone. Lodstone where
known as “Magnetite”, probably named
after the shepherd Magnes.

Key Concepts:

• Magnet can attract materials.

• Not all materials are attracted by magnets.
• Materials made of metals are those attracted by magnets.
They may be made of iron, nickel and cobalt.
Nickel- a hard silver-white material, can also
be made into coin. E.g 5 cents Canadian coin
Iron- is a heavy type metal and is used to make
steel in many products.
Cobalt- a hard, shiny, silver-white metal that is often
mixed with other metals.
Materials which are non metals are
not attracted by magnets. They may be
made of rubber, plastic or wood, or even
cloth.
What can magnets
do to some materials?
Are magnets
important? Why?
Group Activity:
Group 1 and 2: Draw objects found at home that are
attracted by magnets.
Group 3 and 4: Draw objects found inside the
classroom that are attracted by
magnets.
