SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY

WHY DO YOU THINK THEIR RELATIONS MATTER?
IN MY OWN OPINION, THEIR RELATIONS MATTERS BECAUSE…

The relations between science and technology

matters because both have laid the foundations
for the progress of society and have
contributed to making people's lives more
materially prosperous and more convenient.
SCIENCE (SCIENTIA)
 Scientia (derived from Latin) – represents more principled and
less arbitrary demarcation though there may be good reasons to
focus on “science” in the conventional English sense of the word.
 Has social identity role or not shared by the humanities; not least
in relation to engineering and technology.
SCIENCE AND
TECHNOLOGY: WHAT THEY
ARE AND WHY THEIR
RELATION MATTERS?
TECHNOLOGY

 “Technology-knowledge” is a branch of “science”

 “Technological science” in the concept of English
 “Technology-practice” is a subclass of the
“productive arts” in Aristotelian sense.
All of these covers Science and technology.
The question is, Why do you think the interrelation of science and technology matters?

Two major meanings of “technology”

1. Technological science, that 2. Technology-practice that makes it

Today it is common place that technology-practice is not just applied science. It also involves
other types of knowledge, such as tacit knowledge and (explicit but non-scientific) rules of

This will in fact be a resumption of the way in which the relationship between
science and the arts was studied long before the modern humanities-excluding
notion of science, and long before the modern notion of technology that only
includes a fraction of the practical arts. (Sven Ove Hansson)
Seen in this wider perspective, elucidation of the science-technology relationships is
important not only for the philosophy of science and the philosophy of technology, but also
more broadly for our philosophical understanding of the relationships between human
knowledge and human activity, and between theoretical and
practical rationality - Sven Ove Hansson

THE INTERRELATION OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY IS
SIGNIFICANT BECAUSE…

CONTRIBUTES TO
SCIENCE TECHNOLOGY
ACCORDING TO THE JOURNAL ARTICLE FROM HARVARD KENNEDY SCHOOL “THE
RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY “ BY HARVEY BROOKS IN 1994

Science contributes
to technology in at
least six ways.
SCIENCE CONTRIBUTES TO TECHNOLOGY IN AT LEAST SIX WAYS:

1. New knowledge which serves as a direct source

of ideas for new technological possibilities;
2. Source of tools and techniques for more efficient
engineering design and a knowledge base for
evaluation of feasibility of designs;

SCIENCE CONTRIBUTES TO TECHNOLOGY IN AT LEAST SIX WAYS:

3. Research instrumentation, laboratory techniques and analytical

methods used in research that eventually find their way into design
or industrial practices, often through intermediate disciplines;
4. Practice of research as a source for development and assimilation
of new human skills and capabilities eventually useful for
technology;

5. Creation of a knowledge base that becomes increasingly

important in the assessment of technology in terms of its
wider social and environmental impacts;
6. Knowledge base that enables more efficient strategies of
applied research, development, and refinement of new
technologies.
